What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

David just bolt it on weld inserte to the frame rails and bolt it much easier to remove it if needed

Yesterday I realized that my summer break is quickly coming to an end and that I need to get the jeep into good running condition before school takes over. Well the jeep has always ran fine, there have just been a couple things that need fixing in the last month.

First was to fix my winch. I originally thought I fried the solenoid, but after picking the brains of some electricians at 4wp I made a new ground for the solenoid and viola! It worked and i was able to spool in the 30 feet of synthetic cable i had wrapped around my front bumper from over a month ago!

Next was the stock cross member and bent skidplate that hung way down.
A thread popped up in the modified section about cross member ideas, and I really liked what foxwar71 did, so I pretty much copied his design with a bit of tweaking too make it better for me.

I went to K&K and bought the material yesterday, and then today after work I bought a portable bandsaw and some blades. It is a great buy so far, makes cutting cleaner and faster than a grinder, chopsaw, or sawzall.

And then I got a start on my crossmember.

My only question is how do I temporarily move the hard lines that run on the inside of the frame so I can weld these on?

Once I get this done, I am going to start on the skid plate which is going to consist of another cross member further back, some 1/8th plate, and some UMHW plastic.:guitar:

And then I am going to work on rear 1/4 panel guards, I bought some from Chad, but they fit to loose because I don't have bushwackers so I gotta make some new ones. Anyone with bushwackers want a really good deal on some 1/4 panel guards? :peace:

It will bolt on, they just bolt sideways to some plates that are going to be welded on. Once I tear everything down tomorrow it will make more sense.

Going to take my front and rear drive shafts in to drive line specialties to see if they can rebuild them on the cheap.

Does anyone have a milwaukee drill? They are the bomb. along with Erwin unibits. much better than HF. I have a flat belly now.... on the jeep, I'm still trying to get rid of my actually belly...

Holy Cow Batman:gonnablow

Honey did you remember to check the OIL???:twak: Pulling the engine out of my daughters Jeep, Here is what I found...... in the dead engine...

:confused1 Lucy I think something is missing???!!!!???!!??!!??:confused1

Thats the first thing that I said???? I can see pieces in the oil pan. We drained about 10-12 quarts of oil/coolant out.... I still need to figure out how to turn in to unbolt the torque convertor....:(:banghead:
The pushrods for that cylinder were both bent and the connecting rod is twisted and bent...

holy shit! how did she manage to do this and weres the piston? sux the block is trashed to now

If you can't turn it, it's not that big of a deal. Remove the engine with a straight pull forward and that will allow you to take the converter out connected to the flywheel.

Or, worst case, drop the oil pan, remove the connecting rod caps, push the remaining pistons up out of the way if not out of the block, then spin the crank.

I need to do something about my axle-side track bar mounting bolt. I've had some noise from the front axle for a little while and I hadn't figured out what it was. I found the lower control arm bolts to be loose, so I tightened them before going out last weekend. That helped some of it, but I still had a noise/loose feeling when turning the wheel.

Josh spotted the problem for me. The lower track bar bolt is loose/hole wallowed out. I need to decide if I want to weld a washer/plate and reuse the stock bolt, or drill out the mount/bushing sleeve to accept a 7/16" bolt. Problem is I don't have a welder OR a drill bit large enough to do either. lol I'll take it apart tomorrow to see if a 7/16" bolt will work as-is. I may have to ask for some assistance. I wanna go wheel this weekend though! :(

I will post pictures tomorrow. but finally have all the bugs worked out of my flat cross member. Nothing is below the frame rails! no bolts or metal or nothing!

Thanks Mike. Which would you rather do? I don't care, as long as it stops moving around. :)
Sorry about the lapse, I dozed off. :speepin:

I'd rather weld it. No point in doing a bunch of work to create a non-standard part.

I'll PM my number again. We can work out a time that way.

Looks like I'm troubleshooting the '90 tonight.

Not a problem. I'm very flexible and available just about any evening and/or the weekend if you still don't mind helping out. In fact, I'm home alone this weekend so I don't have any plans yet at all.
