Weekend is over...what did you get done?

My new knuckles arrived yesterday! Looks like I know what I'm working on during New Years...LOL.

I just finished (yes I know it's 2 AM) re-gearing a rear axle on a car. Ford 8.8 axle. No vibration under both accel and coast, had a reasonable pattern and lash, but makes a really loud howling on the coast side. Any ideas as to what needs adjusted? I'm thinking the lash might be a little too tight, but not sure and need some opinions

what brand gears? if they are new ford performance gears they may be a 2 cut gearset in which case you can take traditional pattern specs and toss them out the window.

Since the 18th, I...

....Got a few Jeep related things done:

-picked up a new pax side mirror and installed it
-picked up a new steering wheel for Byron
-bought a rear locker from Durbin
-got my "part time" light fixed on my dashboard
-sold my old H&T rear yoke
-finished my SYE install

....Got a few things done around the house:

-got Christmas packed away in the basement (yeah!)
-got a ton of mulch spread
-got the furnace filters replaced
-took down a good chunk of tree that split off during a storm

.....Best of all:

-took 2 weeks vacation and spent every day with my wife and daughters.

Just did a fan clutch on the 98. I hope that solves the high temp problem. Need to check out the PS leak on Ghost and fix the upper 3 link bracket at some point.

Well I found something good tonight. Turns out that my friend (whom shall remain unnamed) was wrong about the 4.0 I pulled from that '99 XJ. It turns out that the cylinder head & gasket were totally fine; it was the water pump that was bad.

The bad part was I'd already pulled the head before I found it :banghead:

After pulling it and finding no signs of a bad gasket, nor did I see any cracks in the head with the naked eye, I pulled the water pump to find it was bad. The really bad part? I told myself I should pull the pump first, but I had full faith in (unnamed) as he's a fine mechanic; one of the best I know. But I don't blame him. Everyone makes mistakes. Look at me....I make them all the time lol

Good time to upgrade to the late model MLS head gasket!

Too late. I've already ordered a regular Fel-Pro Permatorque gasket. I've never had any issues with them. The gasket on the engine looked fine and I could see a Victor-Reinz logo so I assumed it had been replaced at some point. That told me I needed new head bolts so I ordered those too. $40 mistake when I could've found the issue at the pump, but oh well. Luckily I got the order in before the holiday so there wasn't a delay in shipping. They went out same day (Thursday).

In the mean time, I'm working on my brother-in-law's '92 XJ in which his son's friend wrecked. Damage isn't terrible, but the passenger's front frame rail took a good lick. Figured out today that while I don't have an actual frame rack, having the XJ chained down on the trailer makes a mighty fine makeshift rack for the DIYer as long as I don't expect perfection

Fan clutch didn't do the trick. As well as I remember this one has a new water pump. So I picked up a thermostat today. She runs good warms up slowly then all of a sudden shes hot. I'm thinking the thermostat might be sticking closed. It was $10 so worth the time and dollars in my onion.

Yeah, if you marinate the thermostat in chicken broth, then sear it and roast with caramelized onion and sage, and then baste with a lemon caper sauce it is really tender. Great eating!!!

oh boy.... you guys are too funny..... :banghead:

Getting hate ****ed on a engine that I expected to be an easy head replacement. PO ran it dry and milkshaky for some 10K after gasket blew/head cracked. Lots of metals in the pan, rod bearings washed and 4 cracked pistons. Checked main bearings and they are within spec. Got new pistons and started installing them only to find out the journals are warped and way out of spec. Every time we get deeper into it we find more shit wrong with this block. Its down to either a machine shop fix or find another block.

Anyone know a place that will turn a block/crank (maybe cam) and bore for less than 5 bills? Cylinders seem ok/fair and we had good oil pressure before tearing it down and at the moment it seems that the rod journals and head were just bad.

Maybe we can add this to the menu for the potlock at the Crawl? :laugh3:

Well my weekend didn't go anything as I had planned. Worked on the Grand all day Friday. 7:30am Saturday we are headed to the ER to find out my wife's gallbladder has to come out. Surgery scheduled for 5 pm. No rooms so we stay in the ER until time for surgery - not all was lost as there happened to be a Walking Dead marathon on AMC. I missed a few episodes but pretty much got caught up on the current season.

Had to take my daughter to the walk-in Sunday am to try to figure out why she was running a fever. Ran all over getting medicine and such.

Monday that did a MRI to see if there was any blockage in the bile duct on my wife. None was found so we finally got to leave the hospital Monday around 4pm.

I'm tired. I had to come to work to get a break...LOL.

My weekend sucked and 2016 is off to a rough start so far. At least everyone is getting better.
