The methanol isn't leaking.

Propanediol is a soy bean oil derivative made from corn used in deicing and in antifreeze, as well as in laundry and cleaning products, said Adam Myrick with the South Carolina Division of Health and Environmental Control. Propanediol is not hazardous and the leak is contained, Myrick said in an 11 a.m. news conference.
Tanker cars carrying methanol, which is flammable and was the main concern of emergency responders, were not breached, Myrick said.
The propanediol leak was contained in natural ditch near the railroad tracks, Myrick said. A contractor called to assist in the emergency had also dug another larger ditch, in case any more of the chemical leaked out, Myrick added."​

Actually, my Dad took those pictures. He's on the FD so the let him in a tad bit closer than anyone else. Not sure they knew he was taking pictures. But they're on the web now... too late!

The cause hasn't been released yet. Best I figure is he took that curve too fast or hit bad track. Car 20-46 out of 96 cars derailed. Not sure what would cause the 20th car to derail first.

Roanoke was built around the railroad and by the railroad. It was Norfolk Western then and The Virginian RR until they merged in the 50's.

That yard probably see's mostly coal to be loaded onto ships/barges to be shipped abroad

I never know what they are doing back there-- all I know is I can see 14 of those monster cranes from the back door of the shop, and they never stop loading/unloading ships. There's probably a zillion trailers and containers stacked to the sky.

No complaints from me, though-- Marine Repair Service and International Container Services help keep me in business (along with Norfolk Southern on occasion...):yelclap:

Helping out a Fellow Naxja'er. Tom (Tom11919), here from Alaska for a few months came over to use the lift... we are making a couple bump stop spacers for the rear, and getting his e-brake cable secured after his 8.8 swap.

Yep. Said he has made the trip several times.. im sure he will chime in, I told him I was picture whoring his Jeep on Naxja. He built the swingout bumper a few weeks ago, looks pretty damn good to. Has the skill, just no place to work while hes down here..

I noticed my brakes started sucking and i had new'ish pads (off my old axle) and rotors waiting to go in.. of course a 20 minute job became an hour job when i noticed my drivers side caliper was leaking i installed one off a LP d30 that happened to be laying behind my apt and all better

This will be the seventh time I've driven the Alcan. The prior six have consisted of three trips in a '92 F150 reg cab (tortuously uncomfortable), twice in an '89 Chevy k2500 ext cab (most enjoyable ride by far even though I tried to burn up the trans halfway across Saskatchewan) and once in the XJ. Truth be told, I've done everything on the XJ so far at my dad's place. In his small shed and under a big oak tree. Thanks to you Stump, I don't think I can go back to rolling around in the dirt. When I go to buy a place back up in Ak, I'll have to have a shop with a lift. Thanks again, Stump! :cheers:

Anyhow, here's the spacers installed with the little guides for the ebrake cables and my shiny new Bilstein 5100s in the background. The list of things to take care of before I hit the road grows short. :rtm:

I heard it as Chemical Spill Express.

They do a really good job of tearing up the track from Worcester to Boston with thumpers up here.
