The pan was held on by the orange colored RTV gasket in a tube. I was a little surprised by that. Shouldn't a transmission pan use a proper rubber gasket? Maybe not....

The factory used a reddish orange rtv on the ones I've seen. When you get that gasket and filter kit make sure it is the right one, some interchange databases are wrong and you might end up with the parts for a 30rh instead of an aw4.

I'm surprised. That old gasket was rotten and just crumbled off. Seems like a cheap way around! I'll probably just take the oil pan with me to the parts store when I get the kit. They sold me the wrong one for the WJ last month. The WJ (2004) uses a really nice reusable gasket. It is molded plastic with rubber lines running though the center and around the bolt holes. Really easy to clean and reinstall. Wish they all did that.

Don't you think he needs to add some structure before he cuts any more off? Thinking about going to the Painted Paradise Farm this weekend to see if my brace works.

I don't understand cutting an XJ to that point. Every time I consider it, I get carried away and by the time I've decided where to cut, it's basically the front frame rails and firewall and maybe windshield left.

And the front left frame rail is a known weak spot, the firewall sucks, and so I drop the idea of cutting it up and start pricing out box tubing and DOM instead.

Though my current plan for my white MJ is to spend a few evenings measuring everything, and build a full frame for it out of box tubing, front to back. I plan on putting some really beefy rock sliders / rocker replacements on it while it's sitting there bare, then cut the frame, rockers, and floor out of the MJ (leaving just the cab, inner fenders, and firewall, effectively) and weld it on. My whole stock frame is pretty much toast from rust, as is the floor, so there really isn't much of a difference between fixing/sleeving the frame and redoing the floor vs doing this. I just have to be damn careful with my measurements, it's going to have to involve a few levels, a water level, and some pretty big calipers.
 
Well I was tired of all the body damage so im going to cage it for strength and my body protection and add a soft top
Btw its dovetailed and gas tank recolaction
 
well, i did some tire swappin, and ended up with some goodyear mtr's, which happen to be super noisy. then i hung out with greg, matt, joe, and all our respective womenfolk, and drank some beer. then on sunday i went to short mountain, and broke a front shaft within 5 minutes of being there, and was lucky enough to get ahold of pacific Ed, who happens to be somewhat local and had some spare parts laying around. Thanks a lot, Ed, for helping me get my junk back on the road. it made it home just fine!!

Did the ujoint go? or the shaft?

Good hanging out with ya! Looking forward to meeting up and wheeling sometime soon
 
I think it was this thread that someone asked about the front swaybar bolts. This is what my frame looked like after a year of wheeling 36's for alittle while:

the ujoint went first, but i had to get the jeep back off the mountain, so the ears on the shaft/stub beat each other to death. still made it to ed's, though!:cheers:
i definitely can't wait to hang out and wheel again! i wanna ride in your razr when you get it!
 
yikes! You drove it with a busted ujoint without pulling the inner shaft? That's asking for separated balljoints at the worst possible time. Buy some lottery tickets... and pull that shaft!

was that a 260 ujoint? ive broken one of those...it was nice enough to take out all the ears as well, so i drove a short distance on it too. never broken a 760x though.

im leaving in 7 days to go get it! cant wait to be riding again!
 
Swapped out the steering gear box last night. Still no power steering. Swapping in another new pump today. I've never had so much trouble from power steering.
