Weekend is over...what did you get done?

I just replaced the clutch on my AC compressor a couple days ago. Its pretty darn easy actually. The only 'special tools' you need is a 3 jaw puller to get the pulley off. The clutch plate on the outside comes off first. Just remove the nut in the middle, then install three bolts through the clutch plate. They are metric tapped holes. The bolts go into the pulley, and push the clutch plate off (there is also a key/slot, so be careful). Once the clutch plate is off, there is a snap ring behind that for the clutch pulley. Remove the snap ring, and a 3 jaw puller makes easy work for the pulley. If you need also replace the coil, it also has a snap ring, and just pops right off once its removed. I can swap out a AC clutch in about an hour now that I have done one.

*** I did buy a whole compressor assembly, but only because I couldnt find anywhere that had a clutch only in stock. I only used the clutch, coil and pulley off the new comp, and now I have a spare compressor for when/if they comp actually goes out on my two XJ's.***

Checking the air gap is simple, and rarely needs adjusting if you used the same amount of shims from the factory.

Why do you think the clutch is bad? Just curious. I have gotten very familiar with the AC system in the past few days, and may be able to help diagnose.

^woot! my batchelor party consisted of going wheelin at wooly's in my then-stock xj after a ton of rain on my stocker baldy street tires, then camping, getting completely trashed with a cousin, a couple buddies, and some dudes i don't even know. the next morning i did some more wheelin! the whole time i was wheelin in the rain in my stock xj, i only had to be pulled out once! (thanks bosco01xj!)

what was your party like?

replaced the sway bar bracket bushings on my 93'. they looked pretty good for 120K miles:) i found that the easiest way to do it is to loosen the sway bar link bolts some so that i could just maneuver the sway bar enough to slip the old ones off and slip the new ones on.

made for a slightly improved drive, but still have a lot of slop in my steering, so i'm looking at tackling all the UCA/LCA bushings next...

PM sent. Thanks Stump!

Had my bachelor party on Saturday.

What Ed said.... What's the deal???

Hey, I didn't plan it, I just went to it.

Yeah, your buds that are in charge of this shin-dig are supposed to invite your friends. I guess we're not your friends, huh? Are you ashamed of us?

Yeah, but with the small windows on these things 4-55 SUCKS! Now, taking the doors off is a different story. :)

Hahaha. You're right. Besides when all you're doing is getting some 100* wind, it doesn't matter how many windows you have.

I gotta say, driving around with no roof is pretty awesome... unless it's raining.

High2by, is the motor in that MJ in front of an auto or a standard? If it's in front of an auto, try cranking the flexplate bolts down before you swap it. My MJ sounded like pistons were trying to escape, tightening down the flexplate bolts completely eliminated the noises.

It's got an AW4 behind it. I'll check and make sure they're tight.

Thanks for the tip!!!

This is my second MJ project but since the daughter is turning 18 in December and it's hers, I have to get this one going before I start on mine. :dunno:

Yeah I was getting ready to swap the engine along with the transmission (since I am doing a 4wd swap at some point) and Colin (MoparManiac) heard it and said I should check that... sure enough, they were backed out pretty badly.

If it's been driven like that for a significant amount of time the holes in the flexplate may be wallowed out a bit, which means you really should replace it. Mine worked fine after cranking the bolts down as tight as I could with a gearwrench though :dunno: I figure I got nothing to lose so if they get loose again I'll tighten them down again. You're supposed to use blue loctite but mine was so full of oil/trans fluid leaking everywhere that it wouldn't have done anything so I just cranked them down and called it a day.

Installed an adjustable fan controller, phase 1 of the mechanical fan delete. Also got my rail shifted mounted and most of the wiring done.

loose flexplate bolts will also cause a fluid leak out the converter.... or at least thats what happened with the last one i had..... the trans in that mj never leaked a drop as long as i had it

Huh... never thought about that.

Trans only leaks/leaked a couple teaspoons a month, barely noticeable. The engine on the other hand

when the flexplate bolts loosened i stood there and watched it dump all its tranny fluid out the front in ten minutes while running, tightened em up and it never leaked a drop again

On a side note, I love me some 5FDP.

They were in Indy last weekend but we had a heat index of over 100 so I just went to work.
