Weekend is over...what did you get done?

just did a bit of snow wheeling/exploring here in boone and had a great time!
BFG did not let me down the AT's eat snow like its nothing, i was able to go through stuff in 2 wheel drive that would have been a push in 4 wheel drive. so far im happy! pictures may come later

Finally cleaned up the bottom of the coil buckets. Deleted the factory location tracbar mount, ground a whole bunch of stuff! It really doesn't look like I did anything but I used 3 grinding disc, half a bottle of acetelene and 2 hours of welding... and my welds still look like shit.

Just gotta get the studs for the highsteer arms so I can get the steering mounted so I can find where the tracbar mount will go... figure out how to put sway bar mounts on it and she'll be ready to go in.

I worked on the D44 some yesterday. I finished the gear/spool set up and got the axles in and the spindles on. I ruined a $130 hub when I was pressing a bearing race in with my 30 ton press. Who knew you could mushroom the outer edge of the hub so easy! It was stupid of me to press against that anyhow. So, I had to order one from NAPA to pick up this morning. By the way, if anyone local needs to borrow my setup bearings for the D44 they are welcome. They take a while to make but its the only way to set up a 44 gear set.

Which outer edge? It wasn't anything you could fix with a dremel tool? I've got a couple 6 lug hubs... if you wanted to acquire some.

Got some wider load bars installed. Having my bike trays inside the basket just wasn't working out. Also stripped off the stock roof rack while I had everything off.

I also moved my CB antenna from the spare tire carrier to the basket after this picture. Going to test out the new location's survivability before I retire this old antenna and get a new one/retune.

The antenna will not make it unless it has some major flex in it. I killed two antenna's just becasue they stuck up over two feet above the top of my jeep.

I think I'm going to build a small lean-to on the side of my shed. All I have are about 15 1x6 deck planks and some some 8' 2x4s.

I will attach the planks to the shed like this picture. I will run a 1x6 across the shed then set the others on top and nail into place.

For the end not on the shed, I will do something like this. I will sandwich the vertical posts with some more 1x6 and then nail the roof joists to it.

Unless it's a bad idea? I dont plan on parking a car under it and it's not that big either.

The only time I have actually damaged the the antenna where it is in that picture, about halfway above the roofline, was in a parking deck. Most places I wheel, like URE, are well cleared. It's when I have been to a local spot that I start loving on trees.

Do you have a spring on yours Nick? I can't remember..

I had talked about putting one on, but nope. I think a good loose spring would benefit a lot being on the basket though.

If you run a spring and a metal whip keep an eye on it while transmitting. If you transmit while the whip is bent over and pressed against anything metal you will likely blow out your finals in the radio. That's about all I can think of. I run a spring because the trees love jeeps around here.

Hadn't thought of that. Ill probably do one or the other, fiberglass (currently have) with a spring, or just a metal whip.

Or possibly keep both mounts, and switch it back down to the spare tire carrier when I wheel. Mounting it up high is more for the amount of highway driving I do.

Installed an in dash DVD player and wired up a backup cam so that it comes on automatically in reverse. I'm thinking of getting a second cam for the front and connect it to the AUX input on the new head unit.

High2by came over this morning and we cleaned up and organized the shop some to get the XJ inside for some maintenance. It hadn't moved since I drove it back from Golden Mountain in mid November.

Battery was dead, so while doing some organizing, I put the charger on it. After an hour got it out of the snow and inside where it was a little warmer. We then swapped out the old broken driver stub and pass side small joint axle shafts for a pair of later model ones with the 297X joints.

We had trouble getting the nut off the pass side axle. We had problems at GM and broke a Mac Tools breaker bar trying to get the drivers side off (we ran to the White Farmers Co-op tire shop in Sparta and they removed it for us. Well we broke another breaker bar trying to get the pass side loose. We had to run to town and have the nut removed. I've had the front appart so much in recents months, it practically falls apart.

Also removed the Sureco roof rack. I may sell it.

Went to Kroger's and bought $284 worth of groceries for $156 using coupons. And that included three magazine I bought for $16. My wife likes coupons and I do to. Popped over to the Kroger fuel center and got gas for $2.79 thanks to the .10 off.

Whoohoo, what a great day!

No, it was the outer edge where the big snap ring goes in. Thanks for the offer but I found a complete matching D44 on local craigslist for $200 so now I have one or two extra of everything, including brakes!

Went to my first kayak roll session at the pool Friday night, then took a look around the Bass & Saltwater Expo. Saturday I went to Boone NC, caught up with friends, and hit the slopes with Tim and company. Ended that night with $4.95 pitchers of Killians and a banging quesadilla. Today I took Tim on my short exploration in Pisgah and stopped by Mortimer as well. The cold killed my camera battery so Tim has all the shots.

Oh yeah, it was 5 F when we were skiiing/snowboarding, with the windchill in the -15 to -20 F range.

Packed up the Jeep Saturday morning and took off for Boone. Met up with Nick (as mentioned) yesterday evening for some slope time...with it being my first time ever skiing. Needless to say I provided some good entertainment for a while. Nick has a video of one of my wipe outs, hopefully he'll have it uploaded before too long and it came out well. Spent last night enjoying the same Killian's pitchers and enjoying the company of some awesome friends.

Met up with Nick at lunch time today and took off for some exploring before we left for home. Started off in the Blowing Rock area and ended up just on the other side of Grandfather Mountain.

Nick showing off, as usual:

Me gettin ready to take another run, now that I finally got the hang of the STOPPING aspect of skiing:

Beginning of the exploring. Stopped to take a picture and map out where we were going:

Stopped to grab a shot from under the bridge, didn't even notice the two people fishing at first:

Last stop of the day to give the salty Jeeps a moments rest, and figure out where the heck we were!

All in all probably one of the best weekends i've ever had. Hard to beat a snowy weekend in the mountains with great friends. This is one trip that will definitely have to be repeated again soon!

-15* wind chill...and skiing.....you guys are hartier...uh...younger than I... Specially for NC skiing....didn't think they had anything worth that kind of sacrifice

Believe it or not, on the slopes it really didn't seem that bad. Towards the end of the night you did start to get a little cold. The cold really hit you when you were out in the parking lot leaving though!
