Weekend is over...what did you get done?

Saw the Nashville Pull A Part put 2 new Explorers on the lot so I went to check them out...a 3.55 and a 3.73...oh well.

FYI...that 2000 WJ I mentioned last week is still pretty solid. The motor is gone, but ALL front suspension, steering, knuckles, brakes, etc...still there.

Tim,

What issues with the swap?

The tie rod I pulled from the JY turned out to be bad. Went to put the castle nut on it to tighten it and the whole rod end started spinning. Those things are damn near impossible to find in town...every parts house you call it's minimum 2 days. Finally found one, but it was at Napa in Indian Trail...so pretty much drove an hour round trip to get it and put gas in my buddy's Jeep since I had to borrow it to go get it. The manager at Napa did get me the top of the line one that retails for $90 for the price of the cheaper one ($50) because of the bind I was in and how far I had to drive...which was pretty freakin cool of him.

Didn't do much of anything this weekend.

Started dreaming about just going to a D44 front and rear axle instead of trying to build up the D30. I'm not happy with my D30 for a number of reasons.

I know where an XJ D44 is Ed! Gotta drive up here for it though.

Timbo, that has happened to me. Trick I learned - slam the taper into the knuckle as hard as uou can, then use the stock bottle jack to press up on it while tightening. Puts a lot more pressure on the taper.

If that doesn't work, back the nut off, wire wheel the stud, and try again with a bit of pbblaster applied to the threads.

I mostly got the massivemobile fixed with the help of a local NAXJA member :yelclap:

Nothing! I'm @ Jekyll Island! Boards and doing research while the family is still sleeping is the closest I've come to it!

Yeah man I was reading up on this and what I read was that this doesn't necessarily mean that it is bad. You probably could have used them.

OK -
So, the TRE going from my new tie rod to the drag link is bad / spins when I try to put a nut on it.
How do I replace this part? I haven't messed with it a whole lot (bigger fish to fry at the moment) but even after scraping the grease & grime off it, I don't see any way to remove the bad end there...

either put pressure on it using a jack or by putting tension on it using a pickle fork. That will keep it from spinning....
BTW.Just because it spins doesn't mean its bad.

That came from here.

Worked on upgrading my alt and relocating it up top, Its pretty much done now I have to rewire all my mains. and make some connections work. Took out a bunch of ac equipment to do the relocation kind of a learning experience. There isn't a very detailed write up out there on how to do this so I may have to put one together, I had to pull bits and pieces form different write ups and people.

Does anyone know how far you need to go to do an ac delete? Right now the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and lines are all gone. Do I need to take out more?

You can take out as much or as little as you want. If you want to go all the way, get an HVAC control panel from a non-AC equipped XJ or MJ at the junkyard and install it. They don't even have positions for the switches for AC settings. Kinda tough to find though, I've seen it in some 96- XJs and most of the MJs at the junkyard.

Don't care to swap out that but I would like to get rid of all of the equipment for it if its not getting used. Right now I stopped at the lines where they come off what looks like an aluminum block. What else is there to remove?

The block by the firewall? That's some sort of metering block or orifice or something attached to the evaporator... but you pulled the evaporator, unless you meant the accumulator/drier (the metal can attached to one of the lines.)

I think you've got most of it, I guess you could pull some relays as well but those aren't really a big deal.

Yep.

It's a pain in the ass to take out, and isn't really hurting anything sitting there, I would leave it alone till you have to pull the dash for another reason.

no, unless you ever want to be able to put AC back in it without replacing the evaporator.

wrecked my motorcycle, drove to indiana, did a 26 miles charity bicycle ride, drove back from indiana, sold my motorcycle, bought an XJ, fixed the xj, drove it home.
lots more drama over all this crap than necesary. stay tuned for a 'NEW XJ' thread!
