Im trying to plan a camping trip/offroad trip sometime this spring/summer. I've been doing tons of research on what trails to do and all that, but seems like there are alot of "go to this trail" thing, but the dates are all kinda old, from about 02 and such. Do the trails even exist or are open still in the GWSF an jefferson? I've never been down that way and just pretty much started looking into them since colorado is too far to do this year! Thanks for any info about where to go or what is still legaly available. Also, am I going to have to "register or check in" before I make my way onto the land? Only reason i'm asking is because I can't find any new info about wheeling in VA/WV...

Most of the trails in the Jefferson are just fire road with the exception of "Potts Mountain Jeep Trail", its a challenging trail for the most part with a very nice camping spot(primitive) at the halfway point of the trail along with a awesome vista looking back towards WVa. I do not recommend going in there without another vehicle for recovery if needed. The trail will not open until first of may due to trail conditions and snow being on the top of the mountain.

To find the trail look in the Craig County VA section of the JNF, The Pines Camp ground is near the lower entrance to the trail. Your Jeep will have to be street legal and have insurance before you can take it on the trail.

I do not get up to the GWNF enough to know a lot about it, some others will chime in. There is a nice private park near Charlottesville VA called Crozet, search RCPFA.

There are several trails on Rt 33 west out of Harrisonburg Va,Some access has been closed off due to the trails being in a water shed for the city. Second Mtn,Dictum,Long run Road are to the east off 33,nothing really but dirt roads with one or two rough spots.
Check out the Lee Ranger District or Dry River Ranger District

I'm going to have to check out the one's on Rt 33... i'm not toooo far away from that, and my jeep can't do much more than dirt roads right now. Thanks for the info!
