Tire face off! Hankook DynaPro MT RT03 VS Cooper STT

What makes the STT superior to the DynaPros? Is it because of the DynaPro's lack of Sipes which would make it suffer in wet conditions I.E snow and rain?

Where have you heard that the Dynapro's have horrible tread wear I'd like to read it to confirm.

Even with the factory sipping the STT still slips and has poor performance in the wet conditions?

Talk to NorCalChris. He has some on his work truck. Only been on there for about a year and practially worn out. Definitely not worth the price.

New tires are quite the investment. I would suggest investing in an American Company that manufacturers there tires in the USA if at all possible.:patriot:

Interco Tires (Swampers)
Cooper (Some of them)
BF Goodrich
Goodyear
Yokahoma (Doesn't sound like an American Company)
Etc.

Remember not all super swampers are that loud. Try either the SSR or the Truxus MT for your situation, plus they are made in the USA.

Good luck,

everything i read while researching tires said that the SST's were pretty good in the rain and snow, much better than km2's. in fact i couldnt even find one negative review on them other than maybe slightly faster wear.

Of those two, I'd go with the Coopers.

Of any streetable mud tire, I'd go with MTR-K's. I've had them for over a year and they have worked great in every condition possible. (dry road, wet road, snowy road, dry dirt, mud, snowy trails, sand, dry rock, wet rock, blown concrete) They kick ass at Rausch Creek.

The mtr is not a mud tire. It is a maximum traction tire. Bit of a difference. But are awesome

The Dynapro's have horrible tread wear because they have a very soft tread compound. That is also why they work so well... Soft tires are great if you can afford them. I also burned up a set in about a year, but they sure were sticky!!! Gonna save up and get a new set of 33" monster Dynapro's for the XJ once both the lockers are installed. Just gotta try the super-soft Dynapro's in fully locked up mode. If you need more sticky than that, you gotta go MAXXIS...

I shall contact NorCalChris in the near future to get his take on the DynaPro's. The fact that they wore out in a year is unacceptable, But perhaps it has something to do with his truck? Like what kind of truck was it if it was an XJ than thats unbelievable.

Good luck,

I will try to buy an American made tire, but it would have to fit my needs but I am all about supporting the Country that I live in and love.:patriot:

I will look into the SSR tire and the Truxus MT, But I've heard that the Truxus MT is a softer compound and thats bad for wear and bad for the warmer climate as it will degrade faster, However this is going on a beater not a DD. (well it might be a DD soon if my GC WJ dies)

Thats good to hear that the Cooper STT's are good in the rain and snow just want I wanted to hear. Are the STT's better in the snow only because of the lack of sipping on the BFG's KM2's? Also, How much faster would the STT's wear?

Of those two, I'd go with the Coopers.

Of the two why the Cooper STT's? Please explain. My friend has the MT/R K on his TJ DD/WW and he does not like them solely because of the road noise that the tires create. Other than that its a pretty darn good tire. I want to say that he bought the tires 2 years ago and the tread ware is about half maybe more. I would get them but I'm trying to be different with my Rig.

The MT/R K might not be a mud tire but it sure acts like one if you get enough wheel spin. What would be the difference between the Maximum Traction tire and a Mud Terrain Tire? Maybe the maximum traction gets more traction in more terrains hence the name maximum traction, And yes the MT/ R K is an awesome tire and looks sick.

I thought that a softer rubber compound was good for the winter weather. I also thought that a harder compound was better for mud and better for warmer weather. If I do purchase the Dynapro's and they burn up in a year then its just not worth it unless I want to buy a new set every year which I don't. But I also want to get the most out of my tire for the time I've had it.

i had the dynopros on my old truck. they did however only last about a year and a half (but that was like 35k miles on em). i loved em. did great in mud and snow. they were only loud on the road at first and then i couldnt hear em at all. they did slip a little in the rain but it wasnt bad if i just drove cautiously. honestly the only thing keeping me from buying the tire again is the price and that ive found that im not wheeling as aggressively as i did, so ats are workin fine for now while im building up my jeep.

I just recommended the STT because I've read a lot of good reviews about them on daily driver and wheeling vehicles.

Plus, your original statement says this is an off-road only vehicle, but for some reason, you are worried about road manners and tire howl on the street? Any tire will get louder as you wear them down and they get slightly imperfect tread. Maybe your friend has a bad alignment, which can make any tire super loud. Plus the MT/R is engineered to be quieter on the street and aggressive offroad. They are definitely quieter than my old Kumhos and has never been an issue for me.

Christ dude, it's marketing. Every other tire company calls their aggressive tire a mud tire and puts M/T after the name. Goodyear puts MT/R after it and somehow it's completely different? No, there is no difference. I'd say a Goodyear racing slick is a 'maximum traction' tire, but that's just me...

thats what got me...

any MT is going to be loud on the street. how "loud" it is, is relative to what you think is "loud."

funny, my favorite tire, the baja claw, didnt make the list that was posted. i am a fan of directional tire. and thought they did great, especially in sand. maybe because it was the only M/T i owned new, with full tread.

you really cant go wrong with the MTR. everyone i know has given them good on and offroad manners. there is a company, kanati, that looks to be using their molds, and have a tire that looks like the old style MTR, with a touch more siping. that was my favorite tire by far. but most of their sizes are for a 16" rim.

So, I guess it is true the the Dynapro's don't last to long or as long as the STT's. Is it weird that I think the you could hear the tires only when they were brand new? Meaning that I thought that as you wear down a tire it gets louder as it loses mass. If you had them sipped or had them studded do you think that the wet conditions traction would improve enough to the level of an A/T tire while keeping the mud terrain characteristic?

Yes it is true that I worry about road noise while this is not a DD and only a beater, I'm not to sure as to why though. I suppose that I will have to sacrifice noise for superior quality and traction / control.

I've never heard of Kanati and I will look them up but I do not think that I will put them on my Cherokee as said by you they are made for a 16" rim.

I guess the reason I wanted a quieter tire is because I don't want to get a headache from driving from point a to point b with just the tires making noise. I can hear my friend's mud tires from down the road, and it bothers me.

they make 15s, just not as big of a selection as 16s.

any M/T is going to be "loud." get over it. some more than others, it depend son the compound and tread pattern. honestly, its a lot louder outside a vehicle than in it. my brand new claws were 100% acceptable (by my standards) at 70 mph. windows up, and radio on comfortably soft, and couldnt hear them. but you dont get a M/T for the on road characteristics, you get it because you feel you need it offroad performance. and you also feel you can live with the cons of running a M/T on the street.

i say pick the cheaper one, pick the quieter one, pick which ever one is sitting in the tire showroom, or just flip a darn coin. youll spend all week reading about tires and then realize you dont have new meats to go wheeling this weekend.

troll?

Thank you everyone who commented and gave insight. I have decided on the tires that I will be buying after reading the thread and after careful consideration to both tires I have chosen on the Cooper STT's in the flavor of 33x12.50R15. Perhaps the DynaPro's will be my next tire after the coopers have been used up.

Thanks to everyone who commented on this thread.

good choice. i took mine wheeling for the first time with those tires today, my rear elocker stopped working and i broke a front shaft so i was effectively open/open and it still did pretty good. 35's, but still....

I've had the Cooper STTs (32 x 11.5s) on my XJ for 4 years now and i have 48,xxx on them! they have plenty of tread left on them (1/8 above wear indicators) and yeah they are fairly loud on the road but they are very well behaved, only time they spin in the rain is when i put that little pedal down to the floor in a hurry. In snow and ice i've had my share of times that they get a little scary but with decent driving its not a problem and i've driven 200+ miles at a time in multiple bad wisconsin snow storms. They are amazing in deep sticky mud which tends to get me in a little too deep to the point it takes multiple vehicles to get me out and even a tractor or two. When i wear these out with out a question im buying them again!
