THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

so we're done talking about driveshafts??? :moon:

Now back to your regularly scheduled NAC-lots of motorcycle-thread.

Not really. Yesterday was me and Colin talking about driveshafts. Kinda the same as today, and at about the same pace.

Pretty much

I'm just glad that's figured out now.

Now to just figure out why the shafts don't turn with the spindles on. I think you're right with the stubs bottoming out. I'm going to go home and measure them. I have 0 end play and there's about .250" between the snap ring and the drive slug.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I've accepted the fact that we'll never talk about anything that interests me. And if we do, Anthony will be an expert at that too :wave1:

My dad is putting his boat in the water soon.

He had to clean the whole thing and go through the engine/prop bearings/etc. after it sunk last year. He had it tied off at the front/rear and it let water in faster than the drains could keep up with.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I had mine out Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. Its nice to know that one out of 5 actually runs. Now i just need to figure out why it has no reverse. I'm planning on going stripper fishing with it on the cape the weekend before nac-fest.

I used to go bluefish/striper fishing with my dad/uncle a few years ago. Haven't gone in a long while. I should change that this summer.

Scott cut about a quarter inch off the end of his alloy stub shafts, with an angle grinder. I don't remember if he was having the same issue, I'll ask him. But I do remember he called the guy at I believe ECGS and he just told him to cut off a bit off the end

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

:helpme:

Ick. Just re-read that and thought you meant that's how much droop you had now.

What's your uptravel at?
I think he said he had about 4" of up travel and something else binds on the way down and is preventing that additional down as well.

Colin, after our chat last night I went and double checked, I have ~3.5" of uptavel and ~7.25" (limit strapped) of droop. So about 10.75" of used travel.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I have 4" of uptravel, and with this new driveshaft I SHOULD have about 4.5-5" of droop.

I based everything in the front around having 4" of uptravel.

That's awesome. It's taking me FOREVER to cut through my rear axleshafts with my chopsaw. My bandsaw isn't doing crap to it.

Bill said not to change the color of the metal while cutting, so I can only cut for about 10 seconds before it starts getting hot hot.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I was just thinking when I was in the shower, I'll have 3 hobbies shortly; jeeps/cars, photography, and scuba diving. This is going to get very expensive fast.

What do you guys think about me selling jeep stuff to buy scuba stuff? :D

Holy crap. Re-thinking now that my situation isn't as bad as I thought it was...I ran the 12" Bilsteins with 3" uptravel and no limit straps for like 2 years, and with a low pinion diff.

I'm still pulling 12" of travel up front, but it's more evenly dispersed at a hair over 5" up and a hair under 7" down.

Should be able to do 7 up/7 down on the YJ project with little issue...that front driveshaft is gonna be long as XXXX. Rear travel will probably be limited at the t-case though.

I never realized that a stock 4-door explorer has almost 10 inches of wheelbase on an XJ.

Yeah... It does get expensive.

I considered selling Jeep stuff in favor of other hobbies as well. Right now I'm still on the fence.

If you think about offroading from a financial perspective, you spend a ton of $ and get 5-30 events a year (depending on how active you are). There are so many things that cost less and give me just as much if not more enjoyment that I can do more often and with shorter notice.

It just comes down to how much you like each particular hobby.

Changing gears - to do the rear brakes on my VW I needed a metric 14mm triple square bit. No problem. I ordered a good set and they arrived. They're 3/8 drive and there's not really enough room to use the bit on a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter but I need more leverage than my 10" 3/8" drive ratchet can give me. I think a 3/8 drive breaker bar would be a viable solution or a long handled flex head 3/8 drive ratchet. Probably going to Sears tonight and finishing my brakes.

DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A PERSONAL ATTACK.

But that's what we told you when you started out. You have to be REALLY into it to take on something like this because it's a huge expense.

To me, not much else gives the same enjoyment.

I guess I should have noted in my case those travel numbers for the front where shock travel, not wheel travel. Out back I'm using all 14" of the shock travel, so am I at least semi-cool? :D

I don't need as much up travel as you as I'm not bombing around at 50mph all the time. I would be nice to have a little more, but it works well for the majority of what the rig gets used for. If I had some spare cash I would like to firm up the front shocks compression just a little bit, but that's ~$25 (if rebound too, add $10). Spendy spendy. :looney:

Your little go-cart-buggy-thing will be neat.
