THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

colin, answer text messages when they are sent to you! :twak:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

haha. because it's better, long story short. I can explain in person tomorrow on our love-cruise if you want. ;)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I was thinking of that, to be honest. My main concern with that would be that I want to have it LAST. Like, forever-ish lol. Also, I don't think I have the skills that'd be required to have something come out good. I do love the idea of it though.

Thanks for the offer with the metals melt-smelt-elting stuff :gee:
True. The great thing about doing cast metalwork (most rings are cast, then finish ground/buffed) is that unless you do a really terrible job of casting, what you get out looks exactly like what you put in. So you can spend all the time you want to working on your wax piece beforehand, get it exactly how you like it, make your mold, and then cast away. Other than that, it's a matter of making sure you preheat the mold properly (and ideally have a centrifugal metal casting setup that spins the mold while you pour to force the metal into it) and bring the metal to a high enough temperature before you start pouring. IMO, it's easier to get a casting right than most other things aside from machined work... speaking of which, you could turn out a pretty badass ring with a 5 axis mill and some really fine tooling.

Kyle - sure, earliest I could show up is like 6 though and I have zero locker install experience, so I'd probably mostly stand around drinking beer and adding color commentary :dunno:

sounds pretty involved :wierd:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I did some aluminum and tin/antimony casting in a campfire a few years ago... it's easier than it sounds. My work came out like crap on the aluminum though, due to a lack of centrifugal force, not preheating the mold, and not being able to heat the metal enough before pouring... how do you think I learned not to do that :laugh3: Tin came out great but had a terrible tendency to make my hand smell like garlic and turn black due to the antimony in the metal I used (plumber's solder.)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ken i'm usually not back from school until around 5 anyways, so 6 would be fine. i'll be happy to supply the beer! i'll let you know when it shows up, still have to figure out hte best price and get it ordered

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

OK, fire me a text or something the day you plan to do it.

I'll probably be in the MJ since I've been driving it almost everywhere these days, which means I'll have most of my tools with me just in case. I've got a sacrificial hub/hub bolt removal socket to hit with a BFH if you don't already.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

oh my hubs will come out no problem, i anti seized the crap out of them and i have a slide hammer. hell yah

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm pretty sure that until recently I could have driven on mine without any of the bolts even existing. Those suckers were in there really damn tight.

hmmm. We'll have to set up some classtime for me, possibly :)

best price you'll find on an aussie is right from them: offroadlockers.com

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Travis - I'd suggest NOT trying to learn from me, I'm (a) not as good as I should be and (b) a terrible teacher :spin1: but I do like playing with fire and molten metal.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

hahah fair enough! It's a thought though, and a good one. It'd be cool to give it to her and then say "by the way, I made it :)"

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

yeah... should I ever manage to find another awesome girl who appreciates such things, that's my plan. "I made this for you" sounds pretty awesome IMO.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i stopped being productive at 1130am today. im almost thinking of walking out and looking at the 60 to see if i suddenly have the urge to do something.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Sweet. I'm hopefully checking out 2 different 97's this weekend as replacements. Too bad they're four doors but I think I'll live as long as they have no rust.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread
