Hmmm, yeah, good point on the no 242 behind ax15. Didn't really think of that.

Why would you say to keep it Renix? I know some people really like the renix systems, others seem to, well, not. What is the major plus of keeping it renix other than the simplicity? For a DD rig I think I would want to have the OBDI or II, but then again I also know OBDI and have been working on my '93 for years so it may just be a "stick with what you know" thing (or get something newer if I went OBDII, though I may avoid OBDII all together now the more I think of it and hear shit :thumbup:).


And I was also thinking of using the ZJ coils up front for the lift, didn't think of the WJ control arms (Though I thought of them for the XJ, just not the MJ).

Edit: Hopeful my plan would be to eventually run a stroker and/or supercharger with a limited slip 8.8 or D44 out back, though the drivetrain would remain in "stock" form for a good while before anything crazy happened.

Can't use WJ uppers on an XJ AFAIK. Check out ehall's beater thread.

It's been done on an MJ. Not sure if the brackets are different.

HOLY HELL. my friend with a H3 (its a promotional thing) has a busted rear driveshaft u joint, and he took it to the dealer to check it out with another few things. they wanted $500 damn bucks for replacing 2 joints on the driveshaft! looks like i'll be getting a little bit of work to make a few bucks this break!

I test drove an H3 at work. It was sluggish and gay. I still don't know how you are supposed to have any visibility in one of those things.

I could live with a complete rewire, I think it could be a fun project. It's about the only thing I haven't done to a rig yet (other than crazy awesome fab work :D). I have done some body/floor work, I have done drivetrain, I have done some engine.... What I want is to make a modern rendition of the commanche.. Kindof a combination of what the MJ would have been if it were continued through the full life of the XJ and what I think the XJ/MJ should have had for running gear from the start.

Granted years ago renix was "the way it should have been done" but I want to build an MJ to more modern specs. Since it will be a DD I have no extreme plans for it so an 8.25 (or eventually 8.8) and D30 should be fine.

I was thinking OBDII but all the OBDII vs OBDI crap was mentioned, which made me re-think that and I am leaning towards keeping the engine OBDI with a late model front clip/interior may be the way to go.

I am thinking:

  • Modern interior: Out of a newer XJ, maybe even going as far as custom set-up heated seats... only since I just rode in by brothers SUV which used to be my fathers until my bro got rear ended and my father passed it on to him, but regardless... The heated seats were nice, not gonna lie :)

  • Modern body: Front clip off a newer XJ. I even though about doing a custom flare-side job, but I am seriously reconsidering that.
  • Semi-modern drive train: was planning complete OBD2 swap with header and full exhaust. Now more planning: OBDI engine with latest 5 speed trans I can get & NP242 along with proper geometry suspension while running approx 1-2" lift all around and 30s or 31s.
  • all new bushings all around including [primarily] suspension & steering to give a nice/tight ride
Not to mention the fact that this whole modernization project was kicked off when I mentioned buying/DD'ing an MJ (old than my XJ) I got ALOT of shit from my father who doesn't seem to have faith in any vehicle over 12 years old... So I kindof took that as a challenge to build a reliable/modern-ish DD out of an MJ. I got my current XJ as a complete POS and built something that even he seems somewhat proud of. Now I want to turn that around and build a 20 year old rig into [essentially] a 10 year old rig. Something that is less off road worthy perhaps, but more classy and ready to see the road for years to come. Fully underbody-protected from rust and everything.

94+ AX15s are external slave. If you're going through the trouble to swap one in might as well find a 94+:thumbup:

I just pulled a pair of nice power, heated, leather seats. The bottom cushion has a little pouch and it has another pouch in the back. The brackets are just flat pieces of metal with 4 holes to bolt it to something. Got em fo' free:thumbup:

Look into a few things:

ZJ v8 coils- little bit of lift, more spring rate(less body roll?)
ZJ v8 tie rod- Less body roll
ZJ v8 steering box- quick ratio
WJ control arms- heard it feels tight(but compared to worn out stock) also makes room for bigger tires
WJ booster swap(do it)

I would put in a 8.8 just because it comes with discs and they can be found with 3.54s pretty easily I believe. Perches are easy enough to have welded on.

So I have to say, newegg officially gets my "best shipping time" award. I placed an order at about 12:30 PM yesterday. My card was charged immediately and by the time I got home from work the status was set as "shipped" though there was no memo/tracking number attached to the order info yet (sometimes takes a while for the invoice/memo w/ tracking entry to be generated/updated). I just got an email at 9AM today with my invoice and tracking info.

So I checked the tracking info *hoping* that it had an ETA of tomorrow or thurs at the latest since I want my stuff by new years so I have something to do over the weekend. The package is already out for delivery! less than 24 hours after I placed my order and it is en route to my house. Now that is awesome.

WTF! At my work connection with a good internet connection speed (amazing actually) yet it still can't seem to keep grooveshark buffered. it seems to be that every other song has issues, this only happens every long while... And it's not like today is an overly busy day here, most of the people are out so idk why the network is so half assed.
