Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah, I was torn between 91-95 for OBDI or later for OBDII. I figured OBDII couldn't be that bad and would be nice for fact that it is newer (and likely has run less miles).

Plus I want to drop an NP242 in it for the full time/part time 4wd option. Since this will be a DD and will sit at 2"-3" lift (at most) and ride on 31's I figured that the 242 would be more than strong enough and give more flexibility than a 231. This will also see very little/minor trail use.

I couldn't remember what year the NP242 was introduced and was too lazy to search, so I just figured I would look for a later year XJ that had one. So I guess my options are
A) Buy a 96+ parts rig with a 242 (and hopefully AX15). Use the interior, transmission, t-case and axles from the parts rig and buy an OBDI engine/computer separate. Also could use the 96+ front clip if it wasn't beat up.

B) Keep the older interior & front clip and get a 91-95 parts rig, use the engine/trans/t-case from that and eventually swap out the output shaft so I could run a 242.

I would just say I will buy 2 parts rigs, but I have to store the truck and parts rig at my buddies place until the work is done and it is on the road. I have the OK to store the truck there, but still am just hoping that he would OK the parts XJ. If I do happen to buy a house before I get the MJ, then I will just go all out and end up with 2 parts rigs. Or just use the drivetrain from my current XJ and throw a LS1 in there :D

Edit: Oh and you mentioned google... I tried and ended up not finding anything. Even tried to search for my post about an auction here on NAXJA and found nothing useful

I didn't read this thoroughly but if you get an MJ it will probably be between the years of 87-90(renix). If so, keep it renix. When the engine dies you can throw in a lesser mileage engine (97+ will most likely have less mileage and will run quieter plus 99+ will have the better intake). The OBD1 and OBD 2 engine can be adapter to the renix system just fine and are more forgiving with strokers and other shit. Just do an egr delete and go. 242s never came behind ax15s to my knowledge so find a 94+ ax15 setup and a 23 spline 242(91+).

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Also your setup is going to be similar to mine if you really want to start your MJ project. Mine is a shortbed that is getting a metric ton dana 44(No such thing as a metric ton shortbed and longbeds are lame). Then i'm using the metric ton springs in the back with v8 zj coils in the front and maybe an extra isolator or two. Then i'm going to use WJ upper and lower control arms(it's been done). I'm wicked big into the retromod thing, nothing will be obvious.

Hmmm, yeah, good point on the no 242 behind ax15. Didn't really think of that.

Why would you say to keep it Renix? I know some people really like the renix systems, others seem to, well, not. What is the major plus of keeping it renix other than the simplicity? For a DD rig I think I would want to have the OBDI or II, but then again I also know OBDI and have been working on my '93 for years so it may just be a "stick with what you know" thing (or get something newer if I went OBDII, though I may avoid OBDII all together now the more I think of it and hear shit ).

And I was also thinking of using the ZJ coils up front for the lift, didn't think of the WJ control arms (Though I thought of them for the XJ, just not the MJ).

Edit: Hopeful my plan would be to eventually run a stroker and/or supercharger with a limited slip 8.8 or D44 out back, though the drivetrain would remain in "stock" form for a good while before anything crazy happened.

morning NAC... retard question time

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this one unfortunately - if I want to weld gussets from my LCA brackets to the pumpkin on a d30, it's forged, so I have to preheat it and use low hydrogen rod or something right? I can't just say xxxx it and fluxcore/mig weld right onto it?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

preheat and let it cool slow. i dont really see a need to weld gussets if it s good bracket but if you wanna do it go for it

when i did my knuckles i preheated to 350* and used a 6011 rod with a 220 arc welder and then buried it in sand for a day, they came out fine

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Hmmm... guess I'll have to leave those welds till I get around to finding a stick welder I can borrow etc (*cough* more beer for Ross *cough*)

I'm gusseting them because I already folded one (albeit very rusted) LCA bracket over, and I don't want to do it again. So I'm completely overbuilding it. So far I've done one LCA bracket side with 1/8" plate (existing bracket), tubing around the bolt hole, and 1/8" plate gussets at about a 30 degree angle, going to do the others with 3/16" plate and tubing since I have a little more space to work on those ones. I'd rather fold an LCA in half than screw up a bracket, since they're bolt-on instead of re-fabbing stuff, so I'm going a bit overboard.

(plus, it's fun and I'm getting better at welding!)

Can't use WJ uppers on an XJ AFAIK. Check out ehall's beater thread.

Unneccesary. Weld the inside seam, box them in with 3/16" and forget about it.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

A while ago, probably 2-3 months by now, I posted an auction link to an XJ that had been rear ended and I was hoping (read: dreaming) that it may be salvageable.. I can't seem to remember the auction site that it was posted on.

It was some site with many cars that had minor->major damage (or repo's, etc I believe) that were being auctioned. Does anyone happen to remember what site I may be thinking of? I know it's very vague and such, but figure it's worth asking here :dunno:

Super duper awesome :NAXJA: search skills lead to this.

(blah blah blah all that other stuff he wrote)

dont bother with gussets to the center section and stuff. Just make/ buy some LCA mounts outta 1/4" and weld them on. nothin special and it gets the job done. Id never bother reworkin/fixing a stock mount. cut it all off and redo it once.

(ps-If youre interested, i have a set of tnt lca mounts that i wont be using.)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Jeff, I'm in Galway for the next few days then I go to Dublin.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

are you doing anything there or just goin on NAXJA? ;)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Jeeps and computers/tech are 2 hobbies that one person should not have at the same time, way too expensive. Now that I fixed the xbox and voided my warranty all hell is breaking loose. Just ordered a 250gb (7200RPM) HDD to upgrade that 20GB (5400RPM) thing that's on there. I don't even use the xbox for games that much anymore (kid brother uses it more than me). Now it's just become a "what else can I do" type of thing. I think the next step is installing the system in a PC case with a PC PSU. there goes another $60+
