aftershock would have been a cake walk, its one of our favorite trails.

But alas, the engine came apart just shy of 80 mph on Emerson Dry Lake. Cause unknown, but after talking it over Mr. Pottenger, the consensus is we probably melted a piston and the rod knock i hear is piston slap.

Maybe fueling issues? Maybe collateral damage from the fueling failure at Glen Helen last fall.

Either way, it sounds like Russ wants to punch it .0100" over with his new custom rods and pistons, and brand it the MK IV Power Plant.

I'm a bit of a wreck, but I'll try and write up a race review in a couple of days. Cliff notes are thus:

Lost all brakes around race mile 3.
Lost power steering box around race mile 4.

plowed through things like a kitten with a broken leg for 55 miles.

fell off of back door in a semi graceful manner. i say fell because we just sort of rolled off without any option to slow down.

swapped the steering box out at main pit.

went on the hunt to make up lost positions and the engine unwound on us.

it turns out i'm a lot better driver with no brakes.

Dallas is an excellent codriver. I think I learned more about driving 4643 in those 80 miles than the 5,000 before them.

car needs:
engine
power steering box
power steering pump?
master cylinder i think
drivers front wheel bearings and spindle

Any chance the loss of brakes was a booster leaking....could have caused lean out and hurt the motor?

Anyway, there's always next year.

it wasn't a loss in power brakes, it was a loss in *brakes*

either way, it will all be worked out. i kinda felt like it was time for a master upgrade anyway.

This might be a little disjointed, but here's what I can remember.

We left the toyota we started next to at the line. Not even a competition there. In the first mile we were pushing cars out of our way left and right. I say pushing figuratively because they knew we were coming and nearly tripped over themselves getting out of our way. It's pretty hilarious, and I'll post video when I have time. Sand hill around MM2 was a MESS. More than half the stock class was stuck trying to get up all at the same time. I bet it was one hell of a show for all the guys watching. Well, except that one guy. ;)

It's a pity we lost the motor. For the first lap we were makin it GO! We had to stop every few miles to pour in PS fluid. I got really good at loosening the belts, jumping out, filling the resi, and getting back in. For any of you who haven't raced, the hardest part is getting in and out quickly, especially the getting in part. Getting the window net in place and getting buckled properly with a HANS, and doing everything totally blind because your helmet wont let you see anything is a challenge to say the least. Even with all that, we were passing cars like you wouldn't believe. We'd pass 3-5, then have to stop, then pass them all back again. We were ahead of the majority of the class even after a long stop at main to change the steering box.

Cal is also a better driver without brakes. If we do this again I'm bribing someone to cut a line right before the green flag drops. It made him more of a wuss on the gas, but overall smoother and probably a net gain in speed. A couple more races and I think he'll have it nailed though, and we'll be able to give the brakes back to him. I know we all love to give the guy crap about being able to roll on flat ground, but he held it together and I don't actually think we ever came close to rolling once, even on backdoor. There was one really long steep downhill where there was a lot of screaming, something about brakes, but I just ignored it because we were going quickly and were on course. He might have been screaming like a little girl, but he was getting the job done.

At the end of the day there was a lot of disappointment for us, but also some joy. Our very good friends Sean and Brian Mcnamara in 4696 finished in 2nd place, and I'm super pumped to have raced with them and to have worked on the car that got them there. Our buddy Jeff Russell in the UFO car also finished around 17th in the big race yesterday, with most of our pit crew lending him a hand as well, which was also really nice to see.

Cal screaming like a little girl?

SOP.

Didn't mean you couldn't go through it, I meant that the 40 cars in front of you were gumming it up.

I spent all day sending car positions to the lakebed via text.

that happens every year. there are two paths through aftershock, and for some reason 99% of drivers don't even know the left line exists. it bypasses the Z turn and a handful of people just plow right on past them.

its off camber and a bit tippy, but would have been fun with no brakes.

I was standing just to the left, but only on Friday. Wish I could have been there sooner. I was in the area for my grandfathers 90th birthday, so had to swing by KOH since I was already in Apple Valley.
