94 XJ England New Member Pleased To Be Here

Hey dude, thanks for your input. You have 31`s on a 2inch all round lift, with no rubbing or other interference, even on the front on full lock. It sounds like a well sorted Jeep. For arguments sake if you were running 31`s on stock gearing would that affect the speedo and mpg, I`m assuming the mpg would get better and the speedo would under read, is that correct.

Ogri.

Hello and welcome!

If you're going to stick with the axle gears you have now (for a 4.0 and automatic, that'd be the 3.55 ratio. Changing up to 30 or 31-inch tires will throw the speedometer/odometer off, but it's an easy fix. On a 94 the speedo is electronic, with a pickup sensor on the rear transfer case output. That pickup sensor is driven by a gear that sticks into the transfer case and meshes with teeth on the output shaft.

Changing to a gear with a different tooth count will recalibrate the speedometer/odometer. It's an easy job - one electrical connector and one bolt, then the pickup pops out of the case (just don't nick the oring seal). There are tables online that show how to figure out the tooth count - the one I've used is Speedo Gear HowTo - GoJeep. This has a table of gear counts based on tire size and axle gear ratio; further down that page is a table that shows the actual part number for your desired tooth count based on year range.

Hello again Rob, thank you for that valuable info. I will look into it. For now I still have standard wheels and tyres.
But when I upsize the tyres to 30`s I will carefully scrutinize the measured actual roadspeed. I anticipate that the differences may not be too great, between speedo and true speed. However we have many speed cameras here some fixed and some are mobile with the police at random points. So at some point I may ask my long time friend in Oregon to source and price that gear sensor you talked about.
Thanks again. Kindest regards.
PS If you get a chance please tell me what shop would you go to buy it. Would that be Napa or OReilly`s or just any local parts shop.

Hello and thanks for helping. On that chart table I found the cog needed.
But the links on that page do not work. Just says page 404.
My old friend in Oregon is not a car person, so I can only recommend him to search in a particular direction. or parts supplier local to him. Likely Eugene.
I looked on ebay USA but the postage quoted is over $100 usd. Its too much for a $30 part. When you consider the duties that will need to be paid on the total cost, this includes postage as well. So the total could easily reach $180 usd. Its a bit too much as my friend will only charge me the actual price.
Where would you go locally to you for the part, as an example.
Regards. G.

I have to be honest, I don't remember where I sourced the speedo gears when I switched to 30s or 31s (even the 30s were enough of a change to put the speedo well off of correct). That said, it could well have been Quadratec (quadratec.com), a jeep-specific mail-order house here in the States.

They do have speedo gears that would fit your Jeep (short shaft, 93-01 XJ, 93-06 Wrangler), would be just a matter of knowing what tooth count to have your friend order.
