Tapatalk taking over?

DrMoab

NAXJA Forum User
So I'm sitting here bored and on Tapatalk (actually Tapatalk 2) and clicked on the "people section. I noticed as I scrolled down that at least 8 out of 10 said they were signed in using Tapatalk. Blows my mind unless its some sort of glitch.

Probably the best (IMO) smart phone app on the market if you browse the net on your phone a lot. Especially if you are in a shady data area like I am right now in Tonopah Nv.

Takes way less bandwidth to browse forum sites and puts all your favorite sites in an easy to get to list.

i use it on the go, plus i like the participated threads section. I can also get PM's and what not alot sooner. so if im trying to buy something (mainly JDM subaru parts that go fast) i can get to them before they all are sold.

Annoyed the hell out of me last time I tried it... seemed like it was missing a lot. Maybe it's improved now.

They don't make a version for the Samsung SCH-A870 phone, so I can't really use it these days.

It is missing some but I'd expect some to be missing when going over the air.

I don't tapatalk to NAXJA very much, usually when I'm out and about I'm not getting on the forum.

I'm using it right now actually. I'm on it to stay updated with threads and what not when I can't be at a computer which is actually very often.

But when I need to search or look at detailed write ups, or make a new thread I'll do so from the computer. This is mostly just a quick view of the forum for me.

<grumble> Part of that is going to be Tapatalk's almost forced advertising. Unfortunately, to get Tapatalk to work with the forum, a display driver has to be loaded. I'm not surprised that they take the opportunity to say "Look who's using this!" I've also configured the server Tapatalk account to not display advertising, no, we're not interested in sharing revenue with Tapatalk's advertisers, we've got our own program.

It works pretty well for basic forum browsing. I will absolutely *NOT* upload any images with it, those actually get stored on the Tapatalk servers and BB linked. I haven't found the terms of service, I don't know if they are trying to claim ownership. It really doesn't have for moderation, and even less for administration. But it does work fairly well for general browsing. At least, the new version does. The old version had some pretty serious issues with crashes when looking at forum threads loaded with images.

Why does it work? It doesn't download HTML. I haven't disassembled the stream, but my suspicion is that it's a customized protocol. For instance, when loading this page in a browser, several dozen requests are made to the server. I'll bet that Tapatalk condenses that all down into a single request, and without all of the HTML cruft. I would expect it to work pretty well over a slow cell connection. On 4g, it flies.

I wonder if switching to another format would be beneficial? Jeepforum and cherokeeforum have their own forum/app that works similar or close to tapatalk there are pros and cons to both.

I know nothing about the specifics, just from the user end.

tried it once. thought it was dumb. Google chrome on android works just fine.

One thing that bugs me about Tapatalk is it doesn't quite understand picking up a long thread to the point you left off. VB is really good at that, with Tapatalk it will usually put you several pages back and it's cumbersome to go forward to where you belong.

Did anyone understand this?

I did. Basically: tapatalk has some annoying "features" and also seems to optimize/compress the data somewhat to send it to the phone, which makes things load a bit faster on mobile devices.

I think Jeff missed my point just a little. This wasn't an ad. If you scroll through the list of options there are things like unread, participated, search and so on. One of the options is people. It's kind of like the list of names at the bottom of the screen on regular Naxja. Anyway if you click it, it tells you who is doing what. Like kastein is looking at the thread nerdy girls of Cambridge or Lowrange2 is looking at the thread why do I keep busting lug nuts? Right loosy, lefty tighty, right?

Anyway it also shows the people on Tapatalk and there was a good 8 out of 10 that were.

My note 2 is pretty much a computer....I just use chrome.
