Well, the time is near. My new stroker motor is in and running, have to do the exhaust and a few other minor things and I'm ready to go. I am ready to do some wheeling, and some camping.......it's been too long.

We'll group up Fri morning at the Dinkey Creek ranger station, like we always do, and will plan to pull out at 8:30. There is gas at the Dinkey store, but it's pricey, and they sell some supplies and groceries, and ice. Remember to use block ice in the ice chests if you want it to last all weekend, then top off with cubed. There are showers at the Dinkey store, and outhouses at the ranger station and at the fisherman's park close to where we'll camp. There are no facilities at Grouse Lake where we'll camp Fri and Sat night.

Everyone bring a little firewood if you can, sometimes wood is scarce, or is hard to cut. Blow up boats are fun in the lake, and fishing isn't bad there. We can take a short hike to Little Doris Lake on Sat for some great views and good fishing, even though the fish are real small. We'll do a Mexican pot luck on Sat evening, so bring something good (Mexican food or not) :).

We'll plan to leave Grouse Lake Sun morning by 8:30, so we can finish the trail with plenty of time for people to drive home. Those who want to can run Bald Mt Sun afternoon, we'll drive right past the trailhead on the drive out from Swamp Lake trail. Barring any major breakdowns, Bald Mt is about a three hour run, and can be run in two hours quickly with a real small group. I'll be running Bald with anyone else who wants to. Is anyone planning to camp Sun night at Dinkey and drive home Mon morning? I might.....have to see how it looks.

We'll probably get to Dinkey around 10:00 pm Thurs evening. Can't wait! :)

We'll be coming in on Sat. morning. Are we running it from the Dinkey Creek side & coming out at Rock Creek Rd.? That's the way it sounds. I'll bring my Guaq. & some reenforcements for Jes's blender. I'll be in for a game of stupid on Bald Sunday. I do need a head count for those planning on staying at my place Friday night & heading in Sat. Speak up & be heard.

Just got back from the Rubicon and am looking forward to a short work week!
Looks like I'll get to Dinkey Creek sometime on Thursday afternoon.
Richard, I'll stay Sunday night if I have friends to camp with. ;)
Matt, we're running it the same way as last year and I'm sure I'll be ready for a little fun on Bald Mt.
I'll bring chips, Margarita makin's, carnitas, beans, and some tortillias.

Jes

I'm in for sure for Matt's house on Friday night. I haven't been to the trail before and I didn't want to try and find my way on Friday night in the dark. Sounds like fun. See you guys on the trail.

Matt, one of the Bakersfield guys wants to come up and meet you guys Sat morning. What time and where would be the best place for him to meet you? Maybe parking lot at the turn at Dinkey Creek around 8:30?

Well just catching news reports off the radio. They say they have been evacuating people around the Pines. I know Dinkey is still away from from Shaver but it might interfer with us getting there.

Have to keep an eye on it and see how it develops today and tonight. Hopefully, they'll get it contained quickly.......a whole bunch of people would be up there this time of year.

BTW, I have a miss in my new motor that we can't get rid of. At this time it's looking like a sticky or just bad lifter. It's not unsticking, so may be bad. This is a real bummer, because I've spent way too much time on this thing, and now it has a problem that appears to be internal.

I'll be there, but without my XJ. I'll be riding with my friend Scott in his CJ. Scott has been on this run a number of times in a green ZJ, so some of you may remember him.

NEW Peterson (Fresno-Kings Unit, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection): 150 acres at an unknown percent contained. The fire is located 30 miles northeast of Fresno. Extreme fire behavior was reported including long distance spotting, torching, and crowning.

Information: Visit the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protectiona website for more information.

Bummer, Rich, hope the motor thing works itself out. It would suck to have to re-pull that head.

Was it missing when you did your 1500 RPM cam break-in?

No, it seemed to run fine. I ran it about 40 minutes at over 1500 rpm, with a number of people around, and it didn't have a miss. I thought it had a very slight miss off and on, but no one else thought it had. The next day, it did have a noisy lifter at first when it started, but seemed to run fine and the lifter quieted down. That night it started and had a slight miss, but then driving it for the first time it had a significant miss under load. It still ran stronger than the old motor even with the miss, and I drove it for about 20 mintes. The miss has become more severe both under load and just sitting there in neutral, but under no load sometimes the miss seems to go away. Under a load, that cylinder seems totally dead.

Next step is to do a compression check, and to pull the valve cover. A lucky problem would be a rocker that loosened up or a bent pushrod, but there isn't any top end noise. An unlucky problem would be a bad lifter (brand new), which means the head has to come back off to replce them, and even unluckier would be a bad cam with a lobe that has gone flat, which would mean that the motor has to come back out and metal has circulated through the motor. I'm not messing with it any more until we get back from Swamp. I'm also still hoping that we're overlooking something simple, but it doesn't sound likely.

I normally stop for fuel at the gas station right at the top of the for lane. We could meet up there at around 7:45-8:00. My cell is (559)706-8627 for anybody who needs it. From what I've heard the fire is right at the top of the four lane below Shaver. 168 is still open... We'll see what happens. Sorry to here about the motor Richard.
