Looking for some 2x6 .188 wall box tube for cut out rockers. Got a price quote of $10 a foot in the Sac area. I don't know shit about steel prices but I am told that is pretty expensive. Anyone buy box tube recently?

I need to get my steering tube, let me know what you find out maybe we can do a steel run together?

Have you tried calling Pleasanton Steel? They were the cheapest I could find in the Bay Area, and it didnt seem cost effective to drive up to Sac to save $5.

Jes did a price check for me at some place in Sac when he was there yesterday. My big problem is finding a place that I can get to easily with my schedule. I'll let you know what I find.

EDIT: I just called Pleasanton steel. $14 a foot. Ouch...

Allied steel is 7.60 per foot Brian but they charge for cuts. So if you have 2 cuts it would be 15 extra. 1 cut is 10 dollars. I am needing steel also let me know i could probably pick it up for you.

Its called Allied Iron 620 Waltermire st Belmont Ca 94002 (650)591-6555 You want me to pick it up i will. I can drop it off at Jes if that's okay with him. I will need his address again

If you find a drop on the shelf then you don't need to cut. I've bought several pieces in the past from these guys, they usually have a lot of drops.
Very true, also if you can find what you need in the scrap piles you pay even less!

Some other steel yards:
Alan Steel & Supply Company
(650) 369-2526
505 E Bayshore Rd, Redwood City, CA 94063

Alco Iron & Metal Company
(510) 562-1107
http://www.alcometals.com
1091 Doolittle Dr, San Leandro, CA 94577

Sims Metal (sometimes you can find good shit in the scrap pile)
(408) 494-4200
600 N 4th St, San Jose, CA 95112

Also they are very expensive but you can find the "metal supermarkets" everywhere:

Allen is pretty pricey. Unsure about Sims never heard of Alco steel. Sounds like you buy a lot of metal Dave

I tried allied in SL for steel, all they have is a very small scrap pile or you have to buy a full stick 20'.

Allen in Redwood City is ok, a little pricy.

I thought Metal Supermarkets was ok for new steel price.

Sims in San Jose has a huge scrap yard and a huge yard of new stuff. This is where I got my rocker material. I got scrap .250 2x6, .250 1.5x6 and the material to connect to the stiffeners for a little over $100.

Seemed pretty good to me.

It all seems to be really expensive. I know when you recycle metal they give you next to nothing. The part that sucks is i remebered my buddy had some of this i could have given Bryan I called him as soon as I remebered but he said he go tired of me saying i was going to pick it up and tripping on it all the time so he recycled it with his f-350 and of course didn't get anything for it. Total Bummer they were like 15' long to i think he had to pick them up with a fork lift. They were outside so there would have been some grinding involved.

did you call s and k out here in sac?
who did you call?
i know alot of places have rems(remnants) i usually buy the rem stuff, its alot cheaper, but if they dont have the minimum length youre outta luck...
if you call s and k and they have it cheap i could pick it up and then you could pick it up from my place since im about 20 mins closer to the bay than s and k steel.

I'd be fairly sure that Jes called a place known as 'Metal Craft Wharehouse' - its where Phil and I bought most all our materials - not because we price shopped, but because they were open on Saturday and a few blocks from Phils. :greensmok

Alco Iron and Metal:

In Vallejo wasnt too bad, if memory serves...

S+K as BlondeJon mentioned was pretty reasonable...

Wow, after calling quite a few places today I got quotes from 10 to 20 per foot. The best prices obviously coming from the shops who stock the stuff, which not many do.

I'm a cheap ass working on a tight budget so I guess I better make a few more calls.

Naylor steel

6x2 .188 14.75 a foot

metal supermaerket

$22.68 a foot

I like naylor steel cause its the closest to me since its in oakland and cuts are free.

Allied steel is 7.60 per foot...
