they work well. I have had to use one in very cold weather. I would rather have a heated blanket :D but atleast this reflects the given off heat. its better then nothing...

They're also good for insulating Camelbaks - great in summer desert heat for keeping the contents drinkable.
 
They actually do work, when going back country 3 or 4 take up little space and can be used in almost any way you can imagine, kinda like a issue poncho, limited by your imagination w/o grommet holes though.
 
I carry (still) a couple in the XJ. The one time I have used one to keep warm I froze my a** off. On the up side, they do make a good moisture barrier. I'm certain that I would have been colder with out one, I may have got more sleep though. The things make all kinds of noise when you shiver.
