...sorry...another build thread...

ya they will get crushed by rocks eventually...

you can do this with some dirt bike tires and sell them to me...

i think ill run these flares for a while but the tire flares are awfully tempting...lol

i have noticed that the xj wants to run at 215 lately on longer drives where it used to run at 205.

i have recently charged and fixed a ton of a/c issues, swapped in a used a/c condenser off a part out jeep that didnt have holes, moved my tranny cooler to the center of the grill area, and swapped in a open cooling system setup.

so i figured the new a/c condensor was very clogged in the fins by looking at it. hosed it out from both sides for a while tonight. then realized the winch is in the way, so i moved the tranny cooler as far down as i possibly could. toppped off tranny fluid and engine oil too. then i completely removed my power steering cooler for now to see if that also helps. i noticed the areas, almost 3/4 of the front, that had either tranny cooler or the PS cooler had no water flow through the fins when i sprayed it out, even though the other areas had water flowing.

i also swapped in a new 195 thermostat and a new open system radiator cap. im hoping between all of these things that it will run back down to the 205 to 210 range. also removed the drip pan for my hood vents.
we will find out tomorrow i guess after work.

the open radiator was almost brand new , looks to be 2 core, and its all metal.
i also removed the tranny lines from the radiator , so i only run the one tranny cooler now.

jeep seems to be running cooler so far, cranking the a/c while driving to blue collar on my lunch break.
so it seems the following helped:
remove PS cooler (beter air flow)
relocate tranny cooler further down instea of right in the middle(more airflow)
new t stat
new radiator cap
remove hood vent drip pans
spray out radiator and a/c condenser fins from both sides

i pulled the front diff cover tonight and all the steering .
some metal and shit in the gear oil, but the gears look good but the big ol washer behind the pinion gear was all mashed up as well as all of the ring gear bolts where so loose they were not even hand tight. its time to build a new front end with a full locker and get rid of the posi...but i am going to run it until then.

i welded the pass side uca mount back on, and i plan to truss that mount as well.

i need to pull the rear DS off and put a new CV setup on since the current one is a little jacked up and some of the material that holds the c clip for one of the u joints is pretty jacked .

and then it goes back to replacing some of the windows.

The "big ol washer behind the pinion gear" is the oil slinger. For that to get mashed up something is very wrong with your diff!

Maybe not this bad:

If you show up at SierraFest with a major KNOWN issue like that and it fails, just be ready for everyone to give you sh!t for "being that guy" forever for it!!! I am not telling you what to do or anything new, but when it comes to the invite only type of runs no one like to invite "That guy!" Hasta

Your 30 is just a tick'in bomb :explosion

im working on building another 30 as we speak. the pinion and ring gear look great.
yeah i agreee something is very wrong with the diff.

i agree with you on wheeling a known issue.

i think i must have ran the last 3 months worth of trails like this - all the reno trails, the rubicon, and boards it must have been like this so it makes me think itll last at least a few more runs.

i am working on building another 30 as we speak so it might even be done by that run.

getting kellys 4.88s gears and master install ,
a free HP housing ,
joshs aussie and carrier,
throw my chromos and outer seals in,
weld up some lca skids (spring plates) ,
new ball joints and uca bushings
weld up a pass side UCA truss (prob use some 2x2 .120 wall) and swap it in.

ill stay in the back of the pack....

Come on, you know it don't matter none where you are in the group.

When it breaks we will be the ones that will have to stop wheeling and find a way to pull it back to pavement as Dana 30 gears are not an easy trail fix.

Dana 30 gears can fail, I have had a few sets go in my old HP30 and seen a lot of them break in other rigs.

To show up with a KNOWN issue like that and maybe wreck someones vacation when it should have been fixed is just mean, or maybe that is just me, and everyone else is ok with this? :dunno:

ill be working hard to get the new axle put together. i have no intentions of wrecking anyones vacation.

been calling around to gear shops, going to play it safe and get a fresh ring and pinion , carrier, master install, and use joshs aussie locker. looking for good prices in the sac area to drive the jeep in to.
west coast diffs:
340 for labor(and they will hook up carrier bearing for 20$ if i do the labor with them if they are needed)
jaws:
360 for labor, but their gear and master install and bearing prices where way higher if i needed that other stuff

"the gear shop" in west sacramento
im going to call, i heard they had better prices

ive been reading lots and lots of threads on various jeep forums and on pirate about oil slingers getting chewed up by ring gear. i think the loose bolts cauased some play that caused the contact , as like many others. i think i will take it to a shop and have them see if its even a serious issue. most guys jsut replace the slinger and call it good. if the slinger made contact for other reasons, like a bad carrier or pinon bearing, thats another story...

Excerpts from the 2004 NAXJA Fordyce/Rubicon trip report.

Our first mechanical trouble came when John (poomba) broke the rear yoke on his D35. CRASH did a little welding and he was fixed up. Check out the Chevy Z shackles.

The weather was as good as it could be, and the scenery was wonderful. This trail has a nice combination of challenging obstacles and great scenery, and we were enjoying ourselves. Unfortunatly, John's yoke broke again a little further down the trail. Here's Lee, Dan and John changing the u-joint in the driveline while a new yoke was being installed.

We weren't making the progress that we needed with this large a group, and it was getting late in the day for us to not be half way through the trail yet. We reached Winch Hill 2 around 6:30, and John broke his rear driveline for the third time trying to take the bypass. Most of the group kept on going, while Jon (Kaczman) and I winched poomba up the hill. We decided not to fix it again, and try towing him with only front wheel drive through the rest of the trail. I towed, and Jon strapped to me when needed, and we winched when we had to. Lincoln and Big Red were behind us and helped often with the strap, winch line, and stacking rocks. We popped the bead off the rim on one of the front tires three different times, caused by rocks and towing around tight corners. It was well past dark by now, which made everything a little more difficult. We got through the water crossings and up Winch Hill 3, but on a big double ledge both poomba and I got wedged between rocks and I broke a front hub. We don't even know what time it was at this point, probably around 11:00. We had to high lift John and stack rocks to get him clear and get the tension off the strap, then we fixed my hub. Here's me and John working on my hub.

We met up with Jes, CRASH and a number of the others at Winch Hill 4. I was able to pull John about 2/3 the way up the hill, but then it was time to winch. It took five pulls from different angles, two using a snatch block, to finally get him up Winch Hill 4. By this time it was 3:30 am and everyone was really beat. John stayed with his rig and made camp, and we finished the trail, pulling into camp at Meadow Lake at 4:40 am. No one had trouble going to sleep.

Most of us didn't break anything.
Great trip, although the wheeling was a little lonely for me since I was leading most of the time. Fordyce was one kickass trail, much more difficult than the last time I ran it. Way fun!

A d35 but image the same being done with a sick d30. Let me know if I can help.

yah im going to get it fixed , hopefully before the trail run. ill be calling you in a bit about those gears. i am probably going to need bearings though.
