Sierra Chapter Rigs

I gave Old Blue to my kid for his high school graduation. I cried a little, but not because of the graduation.

Here's a pic from last weekend's Poker Run on the Rubicon Trail. Damn, I miss my Jeep. On the bright side, I am now focused on building up the Frog.

how does old blue fair on the rubicon trail? or is the rubicon trail not all that difficult anymore?

Yeah, nice burn there MaxxXJ. But seriously, I drove this rig on 31" tires through the entire Rubicon during last year's Jeeper's Jamboree without too much difficulty. Keep in mind they had good spotters and I've been wheeling for years, so my driving skill is not that bad. It has to be. :)

I do not recommend the Rubicon on 31" tires, especially after airing them down and losing an inch due to a TC drop. I smashed in to every boulder on the trail, and resulted in damage to nearly everything underneath the vehicle, and a few things up top. LCA's, TC skid, muffler, cross member, drive shaft, tail pipe, rims, and cat suffered damage. I ripped off a CB antenna mount and scraped some paint on more than a few rocks.

The first part of the Rubicon is ok. I've done the Rubicon to Wentworth-Springs trail four times without too much difficulty, but the entire 17 mile trip through the Rubicon is hectic on a moderate rig. I will not do it again with this vehicle.

It was fun as hell, though. :)

no no no lol you took my question wrong, i just meant was it wore down after all the years of trail use... kinda like comp hill at pismo.

it just kind of got my hopes up is all, thinkin hey i can do 3" lift and 31's and do the rubicon! i dont like the idea of damaged equipment and messed up paint... im still paying on this sucker.

You might do ok with lockers and tons of protection if you run it on 31" tires. I still would not do it again.

I'm considering going with 33" tires and 4.56 gears with my second XJ so I can do the Rubicon and other similar trails in the area with my 4x4 club. The Rubicon trail may be wore down (and rocks purposely exploded away in some cases) in some areas, but I have heard that it has gotten worse in other areas.

33" tires might be answer of being too capable (not enough of a challenge) and having too little capability (resulting in body and suspension damage). There are too few nice looking XJs left in the population so keep it looking good and have fun with the moderate stuff.

Current Set up: 35's, OX Locked HP D30 Front, D44 ARB Locked Rear, Both with 4:56;s and Chromos, 6" TnT Lift, Warn M8000 Winch, Warn Front Bumper and a bunch of other little stuff.

Hasn't seen any dirt yet but here's my Jeep. Same one I posted up all stock a few months ago.....

~4" Hybrid lift
33" BFGs

It's definitely still not done. In the immediate future I'll be bedlining the rockers, ditching that front plastic trim piece and probably trimming some more in the front

rip the plastic off now!!! just do it!

It's off now. Took off the bumper and realized just how tweaked it really is so I'm making a rock bumper a higher priority. I'll probably start building it within the next few weeks. I'm going to bedline it tomorow as well

good stuff! that plastic junk really looks bad...

Thanks guys. Im really happy about the mtr's, and the moabs are great too. I get my rigidco today, so that will be awesome.
