As do OX's. Results of Jes's Dana 44 front OX after all the bolts backed out:

Rare, one time deal or common problem?
Also, how does it actually work?
Engagement easy?
Setup?

Can the lack of endorsement be considered a negative endorsement?

Given the history of bolts backing out... would it be prudent to do some detailing before assembling?

Remove bolts, chase out/clean up the threads, drill for lacing wire, assemble/torque to spec with loctite, then tie them together with some safety wire???

My spool never had loosening issues, but OTOH it wasn't selectable either ;)

part of the problem is the company is in business one week then out the next.

when I installed mine I made sure to use thread lock on all and the torque to specs, never had any problems on the ARB

When the bolts backed out the second time I called ARB. They said the problem was housing flex. They strongly recommend using a case spreader to get enough preload on the bearings to keep things tighter.

Jes is gone (wheeling again, that mofo) so I'll answer for him.

Overall, the OX's have been very good to him. The cable needs a bit of adjustment at first, as it stretches. The new spring loaded shifters are awesome, as they allow you to throw it into "lock" and forget about it. It usually locks with a 1/4 turn of the tire. The covers are awesome, very beefy, and for a 30 we theorize that they REALLY help with center section stiffness. Jes broke 8 or so front D-30 axles with his old D-30 OX installed, and it never had an issue, and it never backed bolts out. It's about to live on in another rock-abused TJ.

The 44 OX that backed bolts out was not machined correctly, of that I am sure. So as Woodrow suggests, I would tap the holes, clean them thoroughly, red loc-tite the bolts, and either tack weld (what I like, because I'm almost as lazy as Lazy Gary) or safety wire the bolts in. This same procedure should be used on ALL D-30 two piece carriers used in the rocks, as far as I'm concerned.

I would not hesitate to run an OX, they have proven EVERY BIT as strong as my much-loved ARB's, and are a bit simpler and idiot-proof.

Here's a cool shot of the OX cable guard Jes fabbed up last weekend:

AH...We always use a spreader anyway when playing in the housings

Do you really need Detroits for the driveway?

Yeah, my driveway is very steep with speed bumps along the way. :laugh3:

So, I will be changing the casings for my ARBs tomorrow. The switch from 3.73 gears to 4.56 gears means new housings because of the carrier break.

Blue or red Loctite for reassembly?

Use the red. Use blue only if you think you will need to take a bolt out as in suspension or something like that. There is no reason to keep taking out the locker bolts, so use red and get them torqued good, and do whatever else like light welding etc that others have mentioned especially in the dana 30 that flexes alot. What axles are you putting the 4.56 gears in? Go deeper if you can and need it, I hope the 4.56 gears are for a 30/8.25 , if not go with 4.88 . It really depends on your tire size and dd vs wheeling. Just a thought. Good luck with the ARBs RM.

Will do. I forgot to pickup Loctite while at the Canadian Tire tonight. My wife stopped at Wally World on her way home and got the Permatex brand stuff for me. Is there a difference?

The 4.56 gears are going into a HP D30 and Scout II D44. Tires are 32x10.5x16 so that should be plenty of gearing. Only the D44 needs to be "re-cased" since the ARB for the D30 is new kit for this config.
