Yea you knew it was coming. With the XJ seat where I want it there is about 3" between the bottom of the steering wheel and the top of the seat. So I need a Thin seat. A lot of the seat sites have measurements but most do not have the height of the seat itself. I was thinking about a set of Richardson Racing seats. http://www.rrpinc.com/catalog/sportsman_racing_seats.htm But I think they may not be comffy in the woods all day.

I am considering trying to build some with the 14 ga I have laying arround. The idea of notching the xj seat to clear the tunnel and then building it back in reverse has been thought of but I'm not sure how that will come out. Anyone have any thoughts or comments? Besides you are screwed!

Don't you have a tilt wheel? :D

I don't have any ideas for you. On mine, the seat is also real close to the wheel, but with the tilt it's OK to get in and out.

Nope no tilt! I thought about that too. I went and took an old seat bottom and cut it to clear to try it out. If I can find some more info on those seats I posted I may get one and try it. If not I'll be trying to fab a base. That should be fun! LOL! It never ends! :sure:

Blacksheep just totaled his rig and had some nice seats in it that are pretty low-profile. He is trying to part out his rig. You can find some pics in his thread in the Pic forum under "my poor cherokee". You might also be able to score a tilt column from him.

What about a removable racing steering wheel? You could be just like a race car driver and pop it off to get in and out :D Plus you could find one smaller than the stock XJ wheel for more clearance.

I got a quick release steering wheel hub and a new steering wheel from Summit Racing. The hub is for a Chevy and the splines are the same, it bolted right on and works like a charm. Much easier to get in and out now and being able to remove the wheel adds some security when we go to the dunes, etc.

I like the idea but I'm trying to get this done by July for the crawl. I may look into them tomorrow when I got some time. I think I got a work arround for ht efactory seat. I'll post some pictures when I get it closer to being in there.

how much for the removeable steering wheel setup??

can i recomend a mastercraft seat, they are easy to fab a custom seat mount for.

Those things are way over priced and the welds are questionable.

Well, at least I hear that they gotta' do a lot of grinding on the welds.

:D

J/K They are great seats.....

I would probably go with some aftermarket suspension seat like Mastercraft or PRP or something. The mounts are simple to make and the seats are way better then the factory offering.

You might not have enough time if you are trying to get done by june though.

For the time being you could cut/weld the factory seat bracket in and get a removable steering wheel. It would probalby work untill you could do something different.

I'm planning on getting the removable steering wheel hub and I have the tilt colum, it would just make getting in and out a lot simpler. I have the Comp Highback seats so you have to sit down into them, you really can't slide into the seats due to the high bolsters.

I got my steering wheel and hub from Summit for $129.85 and the shipping was free. It's alot, but without it, it was nearly impossible to get into and out of the Jeep, I don't have a tilt colulmn either. Also, I go my seats from Renegade here in Phoenix, If you can handle the wait, they make a great seat for a great price.

I ended up notching the bottom of the factory seat for a temperary fix. I lost the digi and have been very bussy with work. Will post up some pictures when I can. I drove it in the field next to the shop on Sunday too.

Hard as a rock comes to mind when describing that seat. I had a friend who had plastic moulded seats like in the link and they sucked, hard even with padding but they where easy to clean with the hose.

have you ever sat in one? my buddy has them in his cj and they arent too comfortable. personally, i would spend the money on a good suspension seat. that way you dont feel like you are going to poop a kidney when you hit some bumps.
Unfortunately the seats on the market are all very thick like the factory ones. I need something that is thin.

If you get the padded cover for those seats they're not bad at all. That's what I run in my XJ and I've spent hours continously seated while wheeling/driving and I have no complaints.

Unfortunately the passenger seat has fallen victim to budget cuts.
