SCW just did a VERY bad, bad thing.

I drove a new 2008 Dodge 2500 with the 6.7l dielsel and Alison tranny.

Wow. Big WOW! I also drove the 6-speed manual tranny, but I loved that Alison. Dealer wanted $42K but because is the end of a bad month, blah, blah they could give me a big discount to try to put me in it very soon. Like tomorrow.

I didn't intend to buy a truck until spring or summer of next year, so I'll see what kind of a deal he's going to offer, but there is no question the Cummins with that Allison transmission is a big winner. I don't think I'm even going to look at used rigs anymore, for the cost of getting them up to the level of the new one, plus the advantage of getting about 80K miles less than what I've seen for sale around here, I'm doing pretty well to go new.

Biggest question at this point is if home-made bio-diesel voids the warantee. Sure is a sweet rig, no question.

If it's ASTM approved biodiesel, you're good. If it's homemade biodiesel, it voids the warranty the minute it hits the tank.

You should be aware of the pros and cons of biodiesel though.

on the plus side
1: higher lubricity, better for the moving parts of the fuel system
2: lower particulate emissions = less cancer risk and the particle filter lasts longer
3: cheap to make to make in the garage

the negative side
1: higher NOx formation = more wear and tear on the catalytic converter
2: the homemade stuff voids the warranty.
3: waste glycerin from making biodiesel at home. about 1 gal for every 10 of biodiesel.

great stuff!

However, the additional NOx is very slight in comparison to the decrease in particulate output in comparison to #2 pump Diesel.

As long as it's ASTM-approved fuel, you'll be just fine - most people report their vehicles running smoother on bio than on #2.

Awesome stuff.

You're absolutely right.

Here in the Communist Republic of California(CRC), we've run into some REAL road blocks from CARB in getting biodiesel approved for highway use in the CRC.

I can understand that NOx formation has huge impact on smog and ozone formation, but with the current control technologies inplace on modern diesel engines the NOx emissions are largely negated.

It indeed is a sweet ride. Except its not an Alison transmission. Dodge actually made a decent auto tranny... :D
Don't be scared of miles. My 98 12v has 246k and is still rolling stronger than ever.

Ford is requiring a fuel sample with all warrenty claims. Expect the others to follow suit.

You beat me to it.

Shane...if that dealer tried to tell you it was an Allison tranny...find another dealer. Any salesman that could be that dumb doesn't deserve to sell cars.

agreed.

X3 Definitely not an Allison. Those are only in the GM trucks right now (as far as pickups are concerned).

I'm in the same boat with SCW, drove an 07 3500 with the 6.7/68REF trans and will probably have it the driveway this weekend. Damn end of year specials, so much for waiting until this summer.

NOT an Alison. Got it. He actually said it's basically the same, and built by Alison, but that still might be garbage. His tech knowledge was about nill, just a ding-dong in a tie.

Still, that pickup had more balls than any muscle car I've ever driven. Including fiberglassed bodied supercharged V8s. It's got a grin factor of about 8.7.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be getting it. I really want to burn bio-diesel/veggie oil, so I'll likely end up getting an older rig with about 100K miles and spending the extra money getting it where I want it. I just really hate the older auto tranny and would like to get something that shifts more crisply, and won't lost the overdrive over time. Shift points suck rocks, too, but I think most of that can be fixed by throwing money at it.

Can anyone fill me in on tranny options/upgrades/modifications that I can get on an older 2500? I'm looking at getting an early -00's, 2001-2003 model. I'm aware that I'll have to watch the tank pump pretty close or upgrade.

Update:

Dealer just called. He took $10K off the MSRP, sell for $33,368 + taxes, fees.

Good deal.....damn. Not what I needed.

Don't I know it. My 4.0L XJ had a hard time keeping up with your Dodge towing your trailer and XJ up the hills on the way to Price.

Damn... I was pretty excited at the thought of a CTD and an Allison tranny! Still happy about your impression of it though. I'm hoping to be shopping for a tow rig next year.

OK, it's an AISIN tranny and the sales guy is a goober. Tranny should be plenty tough, no question about that.

I decided to pass on the truck for now, just at the last moment. If I wait a few months I should be able to pay cash for it and I'd really rather pay up front than on credit. I'm not much of a credit fan-

That price is about the same as similar 2-3 year old CTD trucks are selling for around here, so there is a definate value in the price. Sure wish my Scottish/Jewish/Tightwad/fiscally responsible side hadn't kicked in, I loved the truck.

Sorry bud, but the AISIN only comes in the Cab Chassis trucks. (the ones without beds from factory ususally) The tranny in the regular dodge CTD's is made by Dodge...
He just wanted to get you on the hook. You can get these trucks for 32-33k all over. Read some of the diesel forums. That is a good price, but not special just for you :D

Point me to a Diesel forum. My google-fu seems weak.

$32-$33 all over? That's nice, this is a pretty stripped down model, the only 'extra' it has is the extended cab. Vinyl floors, cloth seats, am AND fm radio....and nothing else. Stripped pretty much bare.

How would one go about finding a better price online? I've got a few months to shop.

Wow, seems like a good deal. That still sells for $32K here-

That's why I bought new.
I looked at used trucks for over eight months and could never find anything that I liked for a reasonable price. Then I test drove a new one and decided to be in debt for the first time ever.
Been very happy with it(the truck not the debt :D ).
