Is ABS module year spacific

Hello everyone, I have a 96 cherokee country
with an automatic tranny a NP242. I have an ABS light on the dash. I replaced the tone ring and abs sensor on the driver front and cleaned the other sensors and tone rings. I am getting a signal from the sensors with the multimeter.
I tried using 2 different scan tools to read codes and both of them will not make a connection with the ABS system. I have power all the way to the module, so I assume the module is bad. Are these modules year spacific or will any module work.
Thank you

I had a 93 ZJ that had the light ever since I bought it, and I tried everything including scoping the wheel sensors. I finally took it to the dealer because I was planning to sell the Jeep and wanted to know which sensor needed replaced. They reset the light, drove it for their minimum 1 hour shop time, and it never came back. So... it's possible you need a different tool to clear codes stored in the ABS system.

Thanks for the reply. I am hoping I can sort this out and use a dealer/ mechanic as a last resort.
