How about it?

What is the camping situation like? How important is it to get reservations?

How late can you get in?

If you do it quick, you can still get reservations at the Pismo State campground, and I'm sure you would need them. We'll actually be camping in the dunes on the beach, which doesn't need a reservation. There are toilets in the camping area along the beach, but no other facilities.

FYI...There is a camping limit for the beach. I have showed up on a weekend last summer and been turned away. I believe the limit is 1000 vehicles for camping and unlimited day use.

I would suggest a reservation, only problem is that they go through Reserve USA which charges an extra $7 per reservation, making it $17 instead of $10.

I am thinking about this one, love them dunes in summer :D

the only reason the dunes would be closed, is for filming or a special event or weekend.. there is no holiday or special events going on then.. THERE will be enough space.....

I didn't say the dunes would be closed? Just "full".

Yeah...Thats exactly what I was told last summer, right before I had to camp in a parking lot a couple cities over.

If you want to know for sure, call them and ask what the limit is...then you will know.

As I said, there is a limit for CAMPING...day use is always open. When I showed up it was on a non holiday weekend at 7 am Saturday morning, they were sold out for Saturday camping. I paid for day use and had to leave at 10 pm. You could stay and risk the ticket, but its a pretty expensive gamble.

they wont be full either. there is a 5 mile area of beach and dunes that go back about a mile or so. the limit is much more than 1000. i have been there before when about 1000 vehicles were at comp hill 4th of july a couple years back...

CAMPING AND FACILITIES
Camping is allowed south of Post 2 on the beach and in the open dune area. Vault toilets and chemical toilets are provided, but water-delivery and holding-tank pump-out services are available on the beach. Campsite reservation information can be obtained by calling 1-800-444-7275. Campsites are available by reservation year-round and can be made from 10 days to six months in advance. Reservations are highly recommended, especially for holiday periods.

not a holiday weekend......

Thats nice. I guess I'm wrong.

Oh wait...no you're wrong. There is a limit on the number of vehicles allowed to camp each night, it has nothing to do with how much "space" is available. State parks decided, and thats how it is. During the heatwave last June, I found out the hard way. I was merely trying to save some people the same trouble.

It is wise to have a reservation. I have been denied camping twice in the past.

When the numbers go over the limit, 1000 or whatever it is, they won't let you camp and will turn you away. This only happens on the busiest weekends, and you're more prone to get turned away if you get there late. I doubt anyone would get turned away this particular weekend, but if you can't get there until late Fri night or Sat morning it might be worth a reservation. I have friends who've called over at the last minute to get reservations on a summer weekend and they were already full. I'll be there Friday afternoon, and I'm not going to make a reservation.
