The trail formerly known as Ramsey:

This trail is reached via an unnamed road about 8 miles up from Boards Crossing Road. You are quickly on a dirt road into a logged area. The trail heads off to the left at a clear cut area and narrows and drops into some tight turns among the trees. Then the trail becomes steeper and rocky with several ledges before you hit a stream crossing and the infamous tree root. Once past this obstacle, its smooth sailing to the Stanislaus River and the trail's end. The area along the river is private property, and there really isn't anything of note beyond the private property sign and potentially locked gate, other than a picnic/camping area. If you wish to use that facility, you should make prior arrangements with the property owners, but for a day trip, just stop at the sign. There is nice river access there. Total distance from the highway to the river is 8 miles, with the last 3 being difficult. It takes about 2 hours to make the trip one-way.
Apparently now the upper portion of the trail is closed with a locked gate :(

anyone ever ran it?

its about 8 miles past dorrington. ive heard its closed but is it closed to camping and wheeling or jsut camping?

?? never heard of it. Let me know when we're going tho!;)

a few weeks ago at boards the guys next to us in the back of the trail talked about, but said something about a closure to camping, but i dont think they said wheeling. ive heard there is a gate. im not sure if its open any more and thats what im trying to find out. its between boards and lake alpine, and supposed to be real fun

really no one on here knows about the ramsey?

bump

sorry i took so long to get back to you. he says hes not sure if its closed, but he mentioned that the ranger station in Arnold could be of better help.

FYI, the ramsey trail has been closed to the public for over 10 years now. Every once in a while someone goes around the gate, or cuts the lock off, but that doesn't make the trail open:idea:

The trail/property is closed to wheelin, and camping. The property owners do not want anyone on the property without written permission, and if you are caught on the property, they will not be happy.

Hope that clears it up:beer:

how do we get a hold of the owners i wonder?

I know a couple of the owners. they don't really want to be contacted, as they don't want people on their property. With the way the world is now, you can invite some people on your property to go wheelin (on a pretty easy trail), and someone gets hurt, and looks for someone to sue.

Lets face it, Piece of crap people ruin the world for the rest of us:(

oh i get it and i understand. did they get sued at some point for someone getting hurt out there?
that sucks and it ruins it for the rest of us.
i wish we could get a trail run up there and sign waivers so they are exempt??
and maybe bring food and do a trail clean up ?
just an idea.
i dont want to push anyones buttoms, ive heard this used to be a rad trail

It is a cool trail, but very mild by todays standards. You could easily get a stock TJ on 31's all the way to the river and back with no damage. But it was a great camping trail, as it is private property, and you didnt have to worry about anyone else being in your favorite spot:D

oh okay very cool.
thanks for all the info 1uglyranger.
some buddies of mine talked it up so much one day that i felt like man, im always out there on slickrock and more recently boards, i gotta run this trial!
i guess if they ever decide to let any guys from the sierra chapter run it ill happily be the first to sign up.
im from oakley by the way! used to live behind laurel school the laurel gardens (my parents still do )

Very cool, I live on Rose Ave across from all the big vineyards:wave1:

As far as the trail goes, it really is nothing except for an awesome camping spot. By far my favorite place to camp ever, and I have not been then in three years:(

Depending on where you go from Boards, you can find some pretty sick wheelin. Follow the dots and dashes on the trees... I have a lot of memories from wheelin back there... Also really good trout fishin:greensmok

good wheeling in the boards area?
other than the one trail that goes right along the stanislaus as soon as you go over the river(fine needle flat trail)
there is more out there?

From the late 80's till 2000 or so, we ran Ramsey's 2-3 times per year. As other posters stated, the trail isn't that difficult, but the best thing was the campsite by the River. It was a flat, first rate private camp, right on the river and some of the best fishing on the Stanislaus river. I remember running the trail 4 times during a trip to pick up late arrivals and things we forgot. two were at night.

When we used to go, we had permission from one of the owners and always took good care of the place. We chopped firewood, cleaned up the camp, rebuilt the fire rings etc. During the New Years flood of 1997, when Boards got temporarily dammed, the water washed through Ramsey's and took out the entire camp. We were the first to camp in May of 1997 and found the picnic tables washed out about 400 yards down river. We carried them back, rebuilt the camp and it was good.

A few years later, the owners spent a weekend rebuilding the latrine house and cleaning up the camp in early May. When we came in two weeks later, the house had already been shot up and vandalized. Needless to say, Ramsey's was closed shortly after wards. Personally, I don't believe Jeepers were responsible for the damage. But if they were, this is a perfect example of getting a trail closed due to bad behavior.

Pacific Lumber was doing some Heli logging and flew in a huge pipe gate which was installed at the private boundary. In the past, you could jeep down to the gate and walk to the river to fish. Now apparently, there is an upper gate near Highway 4 which is closed too.

I've spoken with a Forest Service Ranger who says the upper gate is illegal and should not be restricting access, but no one is forcing the issue.

I have a house in Arnold and Jeep in the area. I haven't been down the Ramseys access road in years. We're headed up next week with the jeep and I think I'll go check out the trail and see how far down the public portion I can get.

The Sourgrass jeep trail at boards heads up towards Ramsey's and from the end, it's not too long a walk to get to the south bank across from the old camp. Just FYI

wow! that iss good to know. very cool. i feel like i am learning some fun "dead" jeep trail history!
i dont blame them for closing the trail i idiots are vandalizing the campsite though...
