Project "Red Rocket"

had some issues with the piping hitting the rear shackle, but that's prety much the norm with bigger exhausts in an XJ.
I had this problem till I solved it with a sawzall. It also bounced off my receiver hitch mounting bracket on the other side of the pipe. I could get it to make noise on command with careful throttle application.

New exhaust is all installed and man what a difference that has made, now I can hear Camille complain about something else :D The prior owner had a Dana 300 in it at one time, so when he stuck the 231 back in it he did not hook it up, he simply put in in the 2wd selection and called it good. I had to install the handle, linkage and a SYE and it actually has functioning 4wd now. I thought originally I have it all adjusted correctly but it did not have the factory bracket on the tranny to hold the other side of the t-case shifter, so it would not have the proper leverage to get it to engae fully into 4wd and stay engaged. I built a bracket this weekend and all is good now. Camille drove it to work Saturday evening and had to use 4wd a few times in the snow and it worked great.

The temp gauge is not working and I think teh sending unit is new from the looks of it, so I have a little chasing work to do. The thing has 3 10" electric fans that keeps it cold as hell, but sure makes it hard to get the heater up to temp. I have them on a switch so I can turn them off as it is warming up but once going down the road in 10* temps it loses the heat from the heater. I am thinking there might not be a thermostat in this thing. I will dig in deeper later this week...Project WTFWIT is getting the love right now with Winterfest 2011 coming up!

may have more work to be done after this evening, Camille just got home from work and said she hit a deer in the Rocket....it is dark out and I will look into it in the morning. She said she was doing 45-50 mph and it went under the vehicle....she claims no visible big damage.

Cheese "I have too much to work on before WF" Man

First things first, is she okay?

Dan- Since your talking about catless trucks, I assume you guys don't care about the lack of cats on the trails? This site seems to be more EPA friendlier then most (and for good reason).

yeah she is fine and drove it home. I just was glad she was OK and did not care to go out in the snow to look at it in the dark.. It can wait until tomorrow.

actually she did tell me the bumper was fine and I had done a good job building a strong bumper! :D The main center section of it is 2"x5" that is 3/8" thick sidewalled...it shoud handle many deer to come!

it wouldn't fail tech for a missing cat.

but we certainly don't encourage it for the majority of the users because they're on the street. For that matter I wouldn't encourage it anywhere, my junk hasn't seen the road in 2 years and still has a converter. And when the exhaust gets redone I'll plop down the $80 for a new one at summit and have it put on as well. I'm not an EPA nazi, but when it's simple to reduce emmissions and not terribly expensive then I don't have a problem.

Agreed... my bottom line is the exhaust not being gross. If you drive it on the street no excuse, run a cat. If you are on the trail and I get a headache from your exhaust fumes :twak:

Was behind some ricemobile in a traffic jam a while ago and he clearly had a gutted cat. It sucked, I could barely breathe.

That works then. 3/4 of the time the jeep is romping around at the barn.... and the exhaust is being used as a hand warmer.

Wish someone sold a higher flow downpipe with a flexpipe and cat on it.

Now that its daylight, hows the truck look?

really no damage that I can see. I was expecting the grill and header panel to be damaged but it sits up high enough that the bumper apparently knocked the deer down and she drove over it. There is hair on the passenger side knuckle area and the steering linkage and a few random hairs scattered underneath the rig. It looks like the tie rod may be arched now, I am going to pull a string on it later and see if it is bent (actually an excuse to buy a heavier steering upgrade!!!) It shows me that I built a sturdy bumper!!no damage to it at all

Camilles recount of the story:

Camille-I just hit a deer!
me-is everything OK?
Camille-NO!
me-shit! are you OK and whats the damage?
Camille-I dont know, but I spilled my salad in the floor.
me-it's OK, it has husky liners....
Camille-oh, everything is fine then, except the deer, I hit it and ran over it with both axles.
me-was it a buck or doe?
Camille-doe, so I did not even go back to look at it since it was not a big buck!

When the zombie deer apocalypse comes, I know who I am buying a bumper from

Now aren't you glad you've been building that thing? The most damage done was to the salad. Like the deer, the poor salad never had a chance!

I have no cat on my rig. Off use only. Not too loud. Not too stinky

Glad to hear the Rocket is good.

Teresa hit a deer with an Olds I had, she was paniced when the door wouldn't open. Then I reminded her there was 3 more doors she could use.

Fore 'glad the wife is okay too' Wheeler

eating salid while driving is pretty hard

She had a salad in the passenger seat, she was not eating it yet. I told her that since she forgot my order of food it was just karma.
