Project "Red Rocket"

Hope you made jigs and templates ;)

We somewhat did. Since Red Rocket is a well sprung rig from being rear ended twice, I had to custom cut and fit some of it. Overall, I have most dimensions marked down and know that I will need a nice straight vehicle to make the true pattern off of. Any takers??? :D

just a few pics from the parking lot today, once again crappy cell phone pics but give a little better daylight view ofthis turd.

Mine has some minor bruising down in the corner behind the end cap that will be gone with a tuck and fold, but I think the chassis is straight. what'd you have in mind? I wouldn't be able to drop it off, but am on Christmas break and told work to stay weekends only. once school starts, I could still come Thursday or Friday.

Are you running the frame strips also? If so, it'd be real easy to incorporate a tank skid with the bumper as all one big piece. We've been talking about doing that combo, but have yet to go about doing it yet.

I did not run frame strips on this one b/c I did not mount any recovery points to it. I am using a receiver hitch/skid plate combo under it. I am still trying to run down a 2" receiver locally, but no luck so far. It would be fairly eaasy to add a frame/nut strip to it. That is how the one on my 93 is and I have a receiver/tank skid combo on it as well as recovery points in the bumper (clevis tabs). it is a very stout combo. I will have to look at my schedule and see if we can maybe work something out that will work for a weekend trip to jig one of these up. Please keep in mind I am not a professional fab shop, so if professional grade finish is what your looking for I may not be your guy...but my prices are not professional grade either :D

Red Rocket is getting a longer shaft :D

just ordered a SYE and will do the ol' front in the back shaft swap....

I had a SYE in the shop but apparently I either sold it and forgot about it or someone else has taken it :dunno: so good thing Fore Wheeler bought some springs from me the other day b/c that $ just went out the door.

I'm in, thanks T, (you know who you are).

Today was a successful day with the rocket. Got the new SYE finally installed..only planned to do this about a dozen different times and everytime I would get ready...something would come up. So it is all in and I instelled teh new drive safts (2 front shafts). It now has functioning 4 wheel drive since it did not have a front DS in it when I bought it. The driveline vibes are gone and now I need to have the exhaust redone. I also removed the 3" of home brew spacers that were installed as a TC drop kit. I cleaned up some of the routing of lines under the rig and am going to pick up a 2" receiver this week. I also installed a 35 speedo gear in the TC while I had it apart. It will be the proper one for when I put the axles from Goldie under the rocket with the 4.10's and the 33's. I picked up a set of Rancho 9000's from JohnD a week or so ago, so I have those ready to paint and then will be a bit smoother of a ride over the blown out Skyjacker hydros. Next up, drop brackets.

I am still trying to run down a 2" receiver locally, but no luck so far.

TSC carries 18 and 24" sections of receiver tubing. That's what welded to the frame of my junk. The loca lone by me has always had them in stock.

i think I am just going to build my own hitch now after inspection the back of the frame area where the old hitch pinched into the unibody when it was rear ended. I am going to plate the rear of the unibody with some 3x3 angle and then have a 2x2 receiver drop down around the back and incorporate an Okie Terry style tank skid into all of it. Okie is the shizzzzz.

I have an appointment for later this week to get a full new exhaust installed/made. The craptastic job from the prior owner def brings the suck...loose and loud, like a prison bitches fart.

:puke:

It sounds like it's coming together nicely Tyler, I need to get down there and check it out in person. Keep up the good work!

I drove the rocket to work today...man that exhaust just simply sucks...I should have cut it off at the header and it would not be anymore annoying. It is going to the shop today for an exhaust estimate...I hope they can get it on the rack today and get it done so I dont have to listen to that loud POS on the way home. On the bright side the SYE has it vibe free and it drove 10X better on the way in. woot woot!!

what and where? it is open both ends and gutless w/o gears right now. I can bring my big dumb animal, I mean gold XJ, possibly??

do you need to have vehicle inspections?

if not, I'd tell them that it's off road only and eliminate the cat, then trade them the cat for a $40 discount on your exhaust.

I'm using a 'Cherry Bomb' on my off road rig, I really like the sound. It's minus the cat and it dumps right out of the muffler, which is not what I'd do with a driver.

Josh James put a C-B on his I believe and he likes the sound (correct me if i'm wrong Josh)

we have to have vehicle inspections in MO to get our plates renewed. I have a CB or Flow Matser (cant remember) on Goldie, and it sounds good, but I m wanting a quiet street exhaust for this rig since Camille will be driving it and I want to hear the person in the drive thru at the bank or especially Taco Bell :D

It has to have exhaust exiting teh rear of teh vehicle in any vehicle that has a passenger compartment. Since it is offroad only, Goldie has under body dump in front of the rear axle and it is all tucked high and tight..like Ru Paul.

I believe that was a dynomax cat back, it does sound nice. e had some issues with the piping hitting the rear shackle, but that's prety much the norm with bigger exhausts in an XJ.
