Project New Gen Comanche

agreed building vs buying and managing the collection and assembly is not the same.

You and Troy don't think it can be done, but I know for a fact it can after building my buggy.

One of the big this is not wasting friggen money (espcially $4k!?!?) on a 4.0.

I'll never understand why (unless you did everything yourself) you would sink another dime into a 4.0L.

Doubt it all you want, but I could do the exact same thing for less than half of that. But, then again it would involve me actually doing work not just writing checks

Gawd!!!!!! I'm SO hoping I can convince a SoCal member to pull those dually fenders and ship them to me......... :banghead:

DAMMIT

I was going to say, pull those and ship them to me immediately! LOL

It's a shame that truck made it to the junk yard in the first place.......... rust free CA truck........ too clean to scrap....... :banghead:

Edit: The guy that found it is gonna go by there tomorrow after work and pull them for me if they're still there. :yelclap:

Lurch is a good guy. If he can do it he will. Then we'll all pee on them and send them out to you.

Proper Piss Preparation Prevents Poor Peeling Paint? :wow:

I will be happy to receive the properly pissed on phenders.........

And Lurch does indeed come through! He grabbed the fenders for me and they're in very good useable shape!

Now....... rather than put together the sub-standard wheel adaptor version of Dually that Jeep originally put together........ Anyone know of a good narrow DRW axle I could look for to stick under my future dually MJ?

I've been eyeballing the DRW full float Toyota axles found under those '80's RV's......... which should be a bit of a lighter weight option than a big D60 or 14 bolt.......

Toyota gears are hard to set up. Not to mention the driveshaft set up to worry about. I think the 14 bolt would work way better. They are all over the place. Would you keep it 4 wheel drive? Or would you go 3/4 ton axles?

Is he shipping them to you or are you waiting until October to touch them?

Lots of us are going to Moab in October. But you're probably too excited to wait that long. :D

Looks like my axle choices aren't as hard to find as I'd thought......... totally just learned about "Cab and Chassis" axles.

Apparently the trucks sold as cab and chassis that get u-haul boxes or flat beds and the like have narrow axles.

Most of these axles have some pretty unusual gear ratios....... so I guess doing this project on the cheap would mean a 2wd truck.

The benefit of using a cab and chassis axle is they'd be cheap, and wheels would be easy to find in 15 or 16 inch varieties. Then I could have a wheel spacer machined for the front that would do an 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern (not unlike the spacers used on the original dually conversions that bolted to the 5 on 4.5 unit bearings).

The design for the dually adaptor spacers exists.... but I gotta see if they make it in 5 on 4.5. Of the 3 on the left, the top one and the one below and to the right would be what they'd look like depending on if I used the unit bearing MJ 2wd axle, or the spindle style.

It'd also be cool if I could find a 2wd WJ axle....... at least that's what this axle appears to be from given the pass. side knuckle configuration and steering links. That way I could use the "big" brakes.........

Edit: turns out that image link to the magazine article is for a 2wd JK conversion to 4x4........ a 2wd JK???? :dunno: So, then I'm guessing that 2wd axle would be wider than the MJ 2wd and D30 axles.... and 5 on 5 lug pattern......

I'm digging the box and tube steel control arms too..... Wonder if they're the same lengths as an XJ/MJ......

Man, I wonder if these are the same truck........ Other than the "Pioneer" decals, sure does look like it - even the rear bumper end caps are the same.

its definitely a JK looking at the coil spring mounts. JK axles are 63.5" wms to wms, WJ are 61.5

From a Craigs ad in TN........ LOVE the stepside bed...... :loveu:

Wonder if that's an '80's Chevy 1500 bed with the fenders narrowed? Or an aftermarket of some sort......
