Project New Gen Comanche

Man, I wonder if these are the same truck........ Other than the "Pioneer" decals, sure does look like it - even the rear bumper end caps are the same.

where is this at ???

I like this fellow Comanche enthusiast. He speaks the truth.

"Come on Jeep...... where's my new truck?"

How about the "New Kaiser" truck? I would buy one. An update to the Gladiator grill work, looks fine. A Hemi would be nice standard engine with a substantial Diesel as the option.

And about as likely to happen a snow in San Francisco.

But then again, it has snowed in the city.

I remember both the '62 and '76 events. Was visiting my parents in '76 and lived there (well, close enough...) in '62.

So..... The dually build has started..... Sorta. Ok, sure I don't have a truck yet....... But is that really necessary? I mean the key parts, the fenders, will be on the way to me soon..... Oh and this followed me home today......

It's a '94 Ford D60 with 4:10's from a cab & chassis truck. It's 48" wide between the inner tires and 85" wide overall which from my initial measurements is "perfect". The 16" wheels will be perfect as well. Its complete with the e-brake cables too.

What I hadn't considered was the fact that these cab and chassis axles are massive...... Yeah, DUH! 10,000+ GVWR axles are expected to be. Yep it's heavy....that housing is enormous and I suppose the axle tubes are what, 1/2" thick? But the leaf packs alone gott weigh 100-120 lbs....

Will the weight of the axle be a problem? Will the size of the brakes be a problem? :dunno: But for $200 pulled and loaded for me..... It was (hopefully) worth finding out...... :shhh:

Yup, that's gonna take some work!

Holy Leaf packs Batman!

I know. And no Pvt. Pyle..... They ain't going under the MJ for this project..... :twak:

They'll help recoup some project funds when I scrap them though.....;)

That sure looks like a Sterling 10.25 but I may just be seeing things. Either way, it's a decent rearend and will certainly handle anything you would want to do with an MJ, and gears are available, so clearly it'll be fine...

Troy, you truly have a sickness...

the guy I got it from parts out big Fords and swore up, down and sideways it was a D60...... sure seemed like he'd know. But yeah, looking online at axle I.D. charts it does appear to be a Ford/Sterling 10.5 axle. I KNEW that housing was too damn big to be a D60...... crap.

I tried to look up an I.D. chart before buying it but the guy's place backs up to Buckley AFB and cell signal was damn near non-existent.

Well, I may still try this axle....... but I've got the luxury of sitting on it awhile..... maybe the proper D60 DRW axle will pop up.

run it and be happy -- its (1) the right width, (2) the right gears, and (3) the right price... its not like the dually will need high ground clearance for crawling or anything -- plus, you'll fold the MJ like a taco before you stress that Sterling axle :looney:

Yeah....... I'm more worried about the AXLE hurting the MJ...... lol.

It'll be fine. Sterlings have the same axle tube size as a D60-1SU iirc, 3.5 diameter 0.375 or 0.5 thick wall as I recall, I'm finding quoted weights of 360-400 or so on the internet which is around the same as a 60 anyways.

I'd consider going disc brake, but that's about it.

Sterling =/= D60 size/weight wise!

My roomate got a free SRW Sterling 10.25 that he was going to throw under the rear of his TJ for a one ton swap.

Put it this way...that center section makes my 14 bolts center section look "small"-ish...and quite a bit bigger than my D60.

And...it is NOT light.

Those sterling 10.25's are fuggin huge...and weigh a crapload.

He's now looking to put it under his first gen dodge truck, and put a 14 under his TJ instead.

Though with all of that said...I still don't understand the reason...nor purpose of putting a dually rear on an MJ (especially when you have a real one) :D

But see, I TOTALLY understand building a rock buggy with savant-level precision and detail, putting thousands of hours into making it pretty and just right..... just to go bash and grind it off the rocks! Come awn Mr. Pot calling the kettle black....... I mean aren't you the guy seriously considering close to $1,000 in paint for your buggy? It'd called "obsession". I have mine, you have yours...... :shhh:

But it's all good, you're not building your buggy for me, I'm not building my MJ for you....... :moon:

It's like this..... I like what I like and right now, I'm seriously considering bailing on the off-roading thing and getting into an SCCA style MJ to play with on the track. And what would be cooler than an MJ tow rig and a light trailer to haul one of these around with? :D

Dunno that I'll actually ever get there...... but I'm having fun on the journey.
