PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

The input shaft turns inside the small piston right? My "rebuild kit" consisted of seals, no new bearings, could that bearing be shot that is inside the piston?

I couldnt Imagen that the bearings be that bad.......I never took apart the small piston on mine...no need......

I say take it apart again and put it back together

Re: PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

I never took it apart either...

Guess I'll jack with it some more.

Did that, but it does not sit flush, should it, the pin is in the notch but only about half way, I cant get it to go further. It turned with vice grips (with a rag to protect the splines).

I don't remember if it sat flush.......but w/o the big piston in it should turn really easy.

it doesnt sit flush, but getting that shaft to align with the small piston is quite the little bugger... (did that sound british to anyone else?

there should be like a washer, a needle bearing caged then another washer infront of the pistion and around the worm gear in there...

also the new teflon rings make it kinda tight till they get fit back to size... though I've always been able to turn it by hand...

spray some more carb cleaner on all the parts .!.:D.!. making sure to get all traces of filings out, and throw some power steering fluid on there as a lubricant for all the stuff...

did it just slide in, or did you have to tap it in? when you changed the seals on the small piston, there was a rubber o ring under the teflon seals, right? did you remove the old one and put a new one in on all 3? or accidently leave an old o-ring in? (i did that once)

pull the small pistion out and look at the teflon liners, one of them might have twisted as you were assembling the small piston into the box (done that before too)...

its only $200 to shove it all back together, go to NAPA and get a reman unported box to start again with...
.!.:D.!.

All new rings and o rings, all lined up, it slid in but was tight. Power steering fluid helped just barely. I'll check the liners but I believe they are all straight. Washers and bearing is on the worm gear, I think I'm just gonna finish putting it together tomorrow and hope for the best.

Re: PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

sorry to bring this thread back, but I can't find steering box rebuild kits anywhere online, I checked napa, rockauto, west texas, but none of them show these on their websites,

this is all napa has,

http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=430&CatId=7&SubCatId=5

would It make a difference that I am searching for a comanche and not an xj?

Got mine from advance auto parts, they had it in stock too.

Around 30$

Re: PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

How bad would things be with 23 of the 24 balls installed?

Re: PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

The plan is to just throw it in and see how it does, probably gotta tear it back down as I think one of the teflon rings got nicked. Tired of changing o rings in the agr box I have, if this doesnt work I'll probably just go full hydro.

Re: PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

Its funny some one asked what I needed to know because I left 1 ball out also and have not reinstalled it yet.I dont think there will be a problem because the gear just rides on it and they dont have a particular hole or spot they must be in.we will see

Re: PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

Why not just put that ball in? It's not hard to get them in. Just lay it on it's side with the sector shaft out, and the recirc tube out. 18 in the worm gear/piston, and 6 in the recirc tube. Oh, and replace the o-ring in the "small piston" which is not a piston, but the spool valve. I swear there's a video coming soon. :)

Re: PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

I lost my 1 ball.

Re: PICS: DIY Hydraulic Assist, Box Modifications, Ram selection, Saginaw Rebuild kit....

I did a full rebuild a few months ago and drilled for hydro assist. I put the balls back in out of order. I didnt realize there were 2 sizes. When I realized this, I called a guy at west texas....very helpfull but I forgot his name. He said no big deal, sometimes they run "all big balls" on an old box to tighten things up. as far as the pistons lineing up... that took me litterally hours of trial and error but it eventually went together and everything works great. good luck. Oh, buy new bearings for your sector shaft. that bearing takes an ass beating while rock crawling, especially if you have a dropped pitman arm.
