Oil leak again

Some times just idleing will get it to pour out the bellhousing when they are worn out. So you are correct on your diagnoses. It is most probably the RMS. It really sucks doing it multiple times.

Maybe the seal surface is grooved and it can't seal properly?

BTW, how did that zj end up in that position after rolling?
 



When I had my engine out 3 weeks ago it looked and felt fine. Didn't see any groves or anything. The ZJ in this picture in the lower right corner its kinda hard to see but started going off the side then hit the rocks then rolled 1 and a 1/4 times. They were under age and partying and driving to fast. Behind me is a sharp turn and they thought they had more room. No air bags went off and there was 4 teen age kids and on had a seat belt but no one got hurt. They were probably going 20 or so

Probably installation error. Make SURE to stuff the seal full of grease before you slide it into the bearing cap. The upper half should slide right up into it's groove with little effort. I always put rtv on the two halfs where the seals meets itself. As shown here.

The two piece seal is an extremely poor and weak design. They usually last about 30k miles before seeping.
 
Ya I just towed a car to a shop and asked my buddy that is a mechanic there and asked him. He said I will need to sleeve it. Not sure what he is talking about lol.Anyone heard of putting a sleeve on the crank for the RMS
 
Did you place a little RTV on the camphered edges at the top of the rear main cap where it meets the block? Many people miss this step when they do the RMS but while those camphered edges make it easier to fit the rear cap into the recess in the block, they are also a superhighway for oil to leak out the rear. The FSM calls this out specifically.
 
I might have missed what year, exactly is your car, and the exact part number of the
RMS you installed, but have you used this? ...

Are you sure you installed the seal facing the correct direction?

The sleeve your mechanic is talking about is called a Speedi-Sleeve. It's a very thin
stainless steel collar that is pushed on to the end of the crankshaft and gives a brand
new surface for the seal to ride on. I do not know whether if one is available for the
4.0L engine, however.
 
lip goes towards the front of engine... have you tried pulling inspection plate off to varify that it is the rms? as far as that sleeve kit, orielly sells it for $40... Good luck on getting this one~ i am not looking forward to doing mine after reading this/
 
I haven't pulled the inspection plate yet. Was going to but my tow truck decided that the fuel pump was going to go out on my way to a tow. Hoping to get that fixed then figure out were the oil is coming from on the jeep.
 
Could there be play in my crank like forward to back? I asked one guy I know that has worked one just about anything with a engine and he said I could have play in my crank. Havent checked yet but figured I would post and see what happens. Might be a few days before I can check it out
