I have a nephew that has an xtera that needs a tranny swap. It is a 2wd and looks no more difficult that a jeep xj swap. Anyone ever done one and know of any issues I might encounter?

Umm, looking under my sister's xterra it doesn't seem like it would be overly hard, but as with any Nissan product looks can be deceiving.

On a side note, a common issue regarding xterra transmission failures is overheating. Whenever you do get that new transmission in, you may want to consider a tranny cooler. Pretty cheap, and decent insurance against future problems.

If you ask hanaxj87, Xterra's a possessed by satan. :roflmao:

It would seem so, I know we have had enough problems with ours. Besides the fact that it gets terrible gas mileage (it's an '04 with the v6), one of the gaskets leaked and crudded up the spark plug holes, and in turn, the spark plugs. Fun stuff.

i haven't actually worked on and xterra but i've done a few clutch jobs on pathfinders and pickups. the ones i worked on were all 4x4 and they suck. i'm thinking that the worst part about the 2wd might be the starter. note: i haven't actually looked at an xterra. and with the older models (late 90's to early 00's) they sealed the trans. bellhousing to the engine block with rtv. that kind of sucks too.

Haven't done a trans replacement on one, but I used to work at a Nissan dealer. And I wouldn't want to work on one again. The problem lies in the fact that they are damn heavy and have such a gutless motor.. similar to Exploders, especially 1st gen exploders.

And why would you want to drive an "Ex-earth"?

Nah I'm just helping my nephew out. Did you "work" on Nissan's or did you work at the dealership? We have started. Should be an adventure.

I used to work at a Nissan dealer, and have worked on Nissan's. I am a certified Auto Tech.

It is actually a quote from the office. But still amusing.
Saw lots of the vehicles with same trans that overheated as well. Some of them you could clearly tell was there fault, as in CAKED on mud that you could barely see thru the windshield.

10 hour ordeal but we got the old one out. Had to remove a lot of stuff I was not expecting to remove. Hopefully we can get the new one back in one day this week.

May I suggest.. selling it after you do the trans swap?
