Need Advice Fellow Xj'ers, Please Help me Out

lock one tire to the other. You know how on the movie" My Cousin Vinny" the car gets stuck in the mud and only one tire is spinning? Well a locker makes it so one tire cannot spin without the other(in theory).

what do lockers do exactly?

Lockers lock both wheels together to turn at the exact same time. An open differential which is what u have lets both wheels turn at 2 different rates for better corning and turning. this unfortunately is not good at all when off-road because then the wheel with the least amount of traction will get all the power because it is the easiest to turn. A locker will make both the wheels move at the same time so when in a situation where one tire is off the ground the one still on the ground will get power and keep u moving.

great explanation man. let me ask yall this wouldn't be cheaper to install everything at once "gears, lockers, diff protection" while they are working in the same area?

It can be, depending on if you're taking the Jeep in to have the work done each time. I'd do the gears and lockers at the same time, then you can save up a bit if you need to to get the cash for some stout diff covers. I wouldn't wheel it too much or too agressively until you get the diff covers though. You can mess up a new set of gears pretty quickly by punching a rock through or smashing a stock cover into the ring gear on the trail. IIRC, quality thick diff covers shouldn't run you more than $100-150 each.

If you plan on doing just a simple lunchbox locker like an aussie or a lock-right then you dont need to worry about doing it all at the same time. Just do your gears and put a lock-right in the rear. Thats what I would do if your set on gears. I run a lockright on the rear of mine because I know that my rear d44 is stronger then the d30 and I would rather have my backend easier to slide out then my front. I run mine in the snow and its really no big thing just understand that it will throw the ass-end sideways if you drive like a knob. Just respect and learning.

As far as bumpers go, I would recommend checkin out www.JCROffroad.com Depending on the bumpers you get you they either come with or you can get 2" receivers installed in them.

The question is what trans do you have? Auto or a 5spd?
I have a 97' with a 5spd. and I'm running 32's with 4.10's and its perfect for me dd and weekend wheeler.

i was leaning to the rockcrusher diff cover, any word on those

call up these people and ask questions they are all really good people to talk to about doing it once and doing it right! Spend a little more $ upfront for quality parts and service and you wont have to spend money again down the road.

I'm not affiliated with these guys, I think they all are sponsors on here anyways. These are the vendors who always treat us nicely time and time again.

Armor and Recovery
I am a big fan a armor before lift. I put on all the stock stuff and then added the Rusty's engine-trans skid (love it), Rusty's diff skids and AJ's rails. The eng-trans skid was one of the last items I did along with boxing the control arm mounts and raising the rear shock mounts. A factory hitch and front tow hooks (with factory mounts) seem to work just fine. I am not a big fan of winches, everyone seems to have one and are more than happy to use it if you need it.

Lockers:
I have run a spool, and will again when I dont DD my rig but now I have Aussies F&R and love them on everything except for sheet ice.
