Here it is folks, my NEW 1985 Pioneer!! No radio, missing knobs for the window cranks, cracked winshield. More oil on the out side of the motor than on the inside. Included in the purchase was one gallon of antifreeze, one gallon of transmision fluid, and a quart of radiator stop leak. The shifter moves as does the linkage but the the Jeep doesn't! All for $200!!

Looks like I need a name for this thing. Led's got his "Cheap Jeep" so that's out.

Help me out here folks...name this thing.

Sounds like it just might leak a little....
A little?!! The guy I bought it from said it ran, except for the tranny not going into gear. He had removed the hood to change plugs(...????) and had not got around to installing the new plugs.

:repair: So this morning I picked up six shiney new AutoLite plugs and got the plug wires back on. Of course the battery was dead, rreeeaaallly dead. After adding some fresh gas to the tank, a shot or two of starting fluid and a jump it did start. party1: There is a racket from the back half of the motor that simply must be heard to be believed, kinda sounds like marbles rattling around in a coffee can.

Anyway, back to the "minor leak." After getting the monsterous 2.8L purring like a freshly castrated Yak my wife looks under the engine and informs me that a puddle of large perportions is forming. Oil was running out this thing and all I could do was laugh. After the engine ran for a while the leak really slowed down quite a bit. I also noticed fresh coolant underneath as well...gee I wonder if thats important?

Gonna head down to A-1 Recycling or Harris Used Auto Parts and see how much a 3.4L is going for these days.

Any free parts gratefully accepted!! :laugh3:

Wolfman has a real nice 4.0L for real reasonable. If you need help shoehorning it there, I have the experience and the tools. You won't regret it. You will need a tranny and most likely a tcase. I have a tcase for $75, or maybe you can get one cheaper or free, you can score an AW-4 for around $100 normally. You would still have to score a radiator, a hood and a few pieces of sheetmetal.

Been lookin' around a bit on the WWW and at my local junk yards. Seems the 3.4l motors aren't too difficult to find so we'll probably go that route. As far as transmissions go, still looking at a few options there.

I'm not too concerned about building an all out rock crushing trail rig, just a safe, reliable rig that can be easily driven off road by a very young driver, and eventually on the road too.

you should call it the "pioneer wheeler" i would be interested in your built up i have an 1985 2dr with the 2.8 "the Whore"

and i got mine for $free$ engine didnt crank 4 wheel didnt lock in no lights and needs body work (rock perferrred body shaping)

now it cranks and wheels like it was 1985

Sounds like a "Money Pit" to me. I think you can get a longblock from Auto Zone with a good guarantee but you'd still have to deal with the carb. How about a 4.3.

I'd call it "Junior" or "JR". You're a genius about building the kid's ride, as the kid grows into it... I'm doing the very same thing.

I just finished a 4" lift this weekend, and my 13 year old is suddenly "motivated" to help Dad with the Jeep. Funny how they get stirred, when they begin to realize it might someday be theirs? If mine is anything like I was growing up, then ours will be a "throwaway" vehicle- every kid chums up at least ONE vehicle, right? If I knew then, what I know now... But you have to take them to some out-of-the-way parking lot on a Sunday morning, and let them poot around the lot with you by their side- THAT builds their motivations, and your trust in each other.

Congratulations on getting your new "project" ride! She's pretty, really.
Ignore the lame comments from the better half, and the friends who come to "help" you make it run well... I wish I had enough coin to even have a "not-running" project vehicle. It's all about the dreams, man.

More pictures, please- as the project comes along!

i am doing the same thing but have cheated just a lil'. bought an 86 xj 2door yeterday that is already lifted and has good tires for my son. he's 16 and lately has been very interested in the JEEP thing. nice to see he has an interest in something other than tv and video games. its a good starter and we'll see where it go's.
we have to name it too.
