My "Hero" Blog

I got my new pinion seal in the mail today and am concerned. It doesn't look at all like my current seal. I'd assume it still will work... Has anyone else use this style seal with luck? It's a national seal PN 710461.

Here's my current one:

And the new one:

Also when I install the new seal should I install it dry? Swipe some oil on it? Rtv?

Kevin, the orange ring on the outside is the sealant, they install dry.
i use a large socket or section of pipe & a hammer to install them.
smear some oil on the inner lip of the rubber seal though.

Good to know, thanks Tim.

So I have some questions about the orientation of the parts associated with the pinion gear. Heres 2 pictures of what I have now.

Not that those really help. But whatever.

What order do all these parts go in? Im not sure that they have been set up properly, and it all fell apart when I pulled it out.

From the front of the pinion gear to the threaded portion where the yoke goes, this is what I have:

Oil slinger
Pinion depth shims
Bearing
Bearing race
weird spacer thing (inner)
pinion preload shims
weird spacer thing (outer)
bearing race
bearing (outer)

Now, I am confused as I always thought the pinion preload shims went on the outermost part of the bearing, between the yoke and the beargin But then again, I've never dealt with these shenanagins before so I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong.

Can anybody help me put these parts in the correct order? I have looked up diagrams online but they either don't label all the parts, are hard to read, or just don't make logical sense..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

your list is correct (as far as i can tell).
note that if you put shims after the bearing & before the yoke all you would do is space the yoke away from the bearing.
with the shims before the bearing you are adjusting bearing preload.

Thanks again for the pointer Tim!

One thing to specify, it turns out that the "weird outer spacer thing" that is on the inside of the bearings in the picture actually goes on the outside of the outer bearing between the bearing and the seal. Its function is to protect the seal by keeping as much oil away from it as it can. At least thats what I have been told.

Anyway, I got the pinion all dialed in. I put a new baffle in (weird inner spacer thing) because the old one was mangled, and replaced the outer bearing (inner was fine). I just finished dialing the pinion bearing preload and have it right around 30 in/lbs.

So I just slapped the carrier in with some paint on the teeth to check the pattern and the pattern is off. How would this happen if the only thing I really changed was the pinion preload shims? Yeah, I replaced that baffle but it had the same tolerances as the one I took out.

Heres a few pictures of the pattern I got.

Looks to me like the pinion needs more shims behind the race to push it forward a bit more. What do you guys think?

EDIT: Woah woah waoh Im not sure how I came up with that. Looks like I need more backlash to bring the pattern in more.

I did not. But the way the gears were wearing in looked completely acceptable.

I would be surprised if it was set up like this the whole time, but I don't know what I could have done that would cause it to change like this.

Good to go now. Just have to button up a few things and it should be mobile.

Just got back from wheeling slick rock. Looks like I cracked transmission bell housing #2. The clutch started chattering on the way home and upon inspection I found a broken bell housing bolt and the I found the crack.

New motor mounts are in the plans as I have no idea what else would cause this.

I'm getting sick of this being a freaking money pit. Haven't had the chance to do anything fun to this thing since I've spent all my money just keeping it on the road. Not happy right now.

Anyone have an extra AX-15 external slave bell housing? Cash in hand. Will borrow car to travel.

damn kevin. thats rough. how is the tranny mount? and motor mounts? man thats weird

Trans mount is brand new. Motor mounts look fine from a visual standpoint. I don't know what else to check, but I'll be building new motor mounts and a new trans crossmember/mount/skid. I'll be using the same bushings for the motor mounts and the trans crossmember so they should twist the same amount under a load.

GordoSMasho, would that bellhousing work for him though? I didnt think the AX-15 was available on anything older than 1991 and was 23 spline... But i could be wrong.

Thanks for the link Gordon. I missed that one somehow, but as the other guys pointed out, I think that's an older Peugeot or BA-10(?) trans. Looks to be. Internal slave too. I appreciate you looking out though.

Thanks guys for pointing out that it was different. I honestly didn't even notice at first glance. I was just like "OMG A BELLHOUSING" haha.

I've been too busy with school to even look at my jeep this week. I have a fat Calculus exam tomorrow and then I can start figuring out my next move.

so here are some pics that i have been slacking on from this latest trip to SR with kevin. Not the best ones but they will have to do. such a fun trip!!!

Gettin gnar bro
