My "Hero" Blog

Yeah I have one sitting in my garage. It looks exactly the same once the reservoir is off. You can probably just buy a bare pump and swap the reservoir.

I just installed one on my GFs 2001 4.7 WJ.

EDIT: they are not the exact same. Did some more research and was misled. Watch out though, these pumps have a tendency to be hard to bleed.

I meant that it "looks" the same. I am well aware the internals are different an that it is a higher flowing pump. I meant that it looks the same in the mounting for the reservoir. I have thoroughly researched the WJ pump swap multiple times over.

Most people don't realize they can just buy the pump itself, without the WJ reservoir, and just swap their reservoir. thats what I was getting at. you don't have to buy WJ pump with a WJ reservoir and try to block off the second return line fitting.

Ok cool so the connector from pump to reservoir is the same. Thats basically all that matters...well that and clearance.

I think I'll rock the stock xj pump for now and see how it feels. If anything I'll Drill out the fitting down the road. I really don't want to risk blowing seals or hoses

I went 1/32 larger. Stock pump and box. Had trouble when fluid got hot but ps cooler helped a ton.

I really need to do this still! Do you think you should have gone bigger?

Are you trying to say the fluid got hot due to you drilling out the fitting? Or would you have had the issue regardless?

And did you actually notice a significant difference? It doesn't sound like it effects a whole lot unless you're doing hydro or unless you drill out the pressure regulator as well.

if you run a front locker , at least 32"tires, and wheel for more than 1hour at a time you need a PS cooler.

PS coolers are dirt cheep to, like for the price of two lunches you can have yourself a cooler. I bought one and installed it because my PS fluid was getting burnt while wheeling.

I get them for 30$ on amazon shipped.

It works awesome kev. I noticed a difference. I can turn in the rocks no problem. Once I did the cooler of course.

Like Jon said the fluid just gets hot from working so hard for so long.

I wouldn't go bigger than 1/32" larger. I'd rather not busy a line.

Run the expensive fluids. That made a difference too. Crappy fluid would break down quick and cavitate.

Iv gotta second this, i decided to buy walmart ATF to put in my power steering, burnt the fluid first trip out. Now granted the fluid is still pink, but you can smell it. Still gotta find the time to flush it and put in some good stuff.

Thanks for the input guys. I should have bought a cooler a while ago. Just ordered the Hayden 401 cooler off amazon for $30. I figured the extra surface area would be really beneficial to me vs the one Rudolph linked. Although I'm sure either would be fine. I have like 4 qts of Prestone PS Fluid in the garage so I'll use that first, but if I burn it I'll throw some nice stuff in.

Progress has been slow. I'm really hoping to pull it out of the garage tonight. We will see I guess!

I run plain Jane cheap cheap atf and haven't had an issue now that I have a small power steering cooler 1-2 seasons on the fluid.

Dang!! I must have been unlucky!

Ahhhhh yes, back on her feet! Just a few more things to button up tomorrow and I'll be on my way!
