My "Hero" Blog

Fair enough. I have less time. I wish I had time to fab stuff. I have to plan weeks ahead of time to get a Saturday.

If you ever need something fabbed up, let me know.

Picked up this gem today:

Progress tomorrow.

Well, now that the bellhousing is all out of the way, I guess its about time to post up my latest acquisitions. I picked these guys up a week or two ago for a smokin' deal.

They're full width axles out of a 78 Ford F-250. Dana 44 front, Dana 60 rear. These 8 lug dana 44 front axles have flat top knuckles, and one is already drilled/tapped/studded for high steer (after I remove the factory J arm). The rear is.... well its a 60. It has 30 spline shafts, and is stupid big. It will likely be for sale in the very near future.

Now, I'm not sure what I want to do with them. Build the front with a different rear? Keep them full width? Put 5 lug outers on it to narrow it a bit? Sell them for profit? What do you guys think? I've been wanting to get rid of my 30/8.25 combo for a while now, in favor of locking hubs and lower gears.

Tire size will be 35-37. If I go through with it.

Thoughts? Go!

sell for a profit for sure. figure out how to do 9" axles front and back. or at least the 5 lug 44/9 combo

9" axles would be awesome, but would also cost a good chunk of money... I really want to do a 9" rear though.

yeah you have no idea. I was looking into doing 9" axles front and back. even had a buddy who could hook me up with fabbed ruffstuff housings for like $250 each unwelded. but wow the tru hi9 stuff is crazy expensive.

junk yard 9's with Dana 50 outters up front (same as D60) would be pretty sweet. just takes some know-how. after a lot of thought, I can't live with a D44 front. I know I'll regret it for the cost

Honestly, since you have the matching pair, I say set them up and run them. Swap discs on the rear. Shave it and you have just as much clearance as a 44. I know that david bricker installed a nicely done shaved d60 in the rear of his heep and still running his 33s for meow.

No progress with the axles.

But, I did go snow wheeling last night with some of my buddies from Foresthill. We went 27 miles back from Foresthill down Foresthill road in the middle of the night. It was awesome. And cold. We estimated that it was around -10*F when we turned around to head back.

Not many pictures, but it was a great trip!

Well, it looks like I'm keeping them full width and 8 lug for now. I can always swap outers down the road if I want to.

I just spent all of my money today on new parts. I ordered:

7/8x7/8 heims for the drag link
3 sets of 7/8x3/4 heims for the tie rod, panhard, and upper control arm for the 3 link
44 diff cover
60 diff cover
2 high steer arms with hardware for the 44

I decided to take advantage of the year end clearance sales offered by Ruffstuff Specialties and 4wheelsupply and saved a fat chunk of change.

Now I'm in need of 8 lug wheels (15", 16", or 17"), used tires from 35"-37", tube, and gears.

If anyone has a line on any of these, hit me up! Prices need to be reasonable as I have a set budget for this build.. And it's not very forgiving.

Meanwhile, I'll be working my ass off so I can order my gears as soon as I can!

I have my 35x14.50x15 pitbull maddogs for sale, tons of tread left. I'd go $600 for all 4. They are used, some chunked treads etc but all hold air fine and tread depth is about 80%

Jake is right on those rims. Ruffstuff is good for tube unless you are doing a large buy somewhere else. What are your link plans? .250 2" for lowers? What about uppers? 3 link or 4?

I love the look of H2 rims but my main concern is how far my hubs would be sticking out. I was hoping for something with 4" backspacing or so to give the hub some extra protection. Is that not something to be worried about?

And Zac, I was hoping for a narrower, more street able tire like an MTR or KM2. But I will keep those in mind. Thanks for the offer!

And Jon, plan is for 2"x.25 lowers. I have some square tube that I may use. Any significant reason to go DOM? I figure if I use the square tube I have now, if I bend them I can just build DOM replacements down the road. I'm planning on using 1.25" heims on one side, and rubber/poly bushings on the other side to keep the road noise down, as it is still my daily driver haha.

I'll be running a single upper with 7/8x3/4" rod ends. 1.5"x.25 DOM for the link.
