Cut a small hole in the floor and take the bolt out..... OR if there's bolt showing go pick up an extractor set and give that a shot...

DON'T cut. That's how I did mine, and having since replaced them on friends XJs by fishing a wrench through the side... Its REALLY easy and I feel like kind of a tard for cutting up my interior, but I was really in a hurry to get my junk out of the shop at work when I did the cutting.

Shock bolt ain't no thang, tell your friend to hit it with a hammer & punch instead of drilling then fish a new nut around back with a wrench with the nut taped or greased into the end. I just did them on my roommate's '95 2 nights ago and all of them (bolts) broke. Took me less than 10 mins to fish the new nuts through and install BOTH the new shocks ( a bit longer than thta if you count time with the BFH).

Yeah, it is pretty funny how many guys replied to this thread ready to throw down or do some wrenching. Seriously, we'd all be JUST as willing to help a fellow XJ dude with some balljoint troubles... But I have plans whatever weekend that is so someone else will have to handle it.

So in order to change shocks you have to go through this process every time? I also dont know how much of your interior you cut up but I mean I'm talking about pulling the carpet back and cutting a 2"x2" hole...

But, I also thought she said there was exposed bolt... you should easily be able to extract that w/o any cutting/punching...

I suggested that she buy some Bar pin eliminators..That way we can go ahead and fix the issue all together

After we get the othe rbolt out of course

To clear up the confusion on whether or not there is exposed bolt or not, what is left of the bolt is pretty much flush with the floor.

Hey guys,

I just want to say how much I appreciate all the help you guys have given me, both on here and in person. It really means a lot especially when I'm still learning about things...

I'm thinking of going over to 4WP today and cancelling my order for the ball joints and while I'm there, switching out the 30s in my trunk with a set of 31s (more weight=quicker settling of the lift=happy Katie)...what do you all think? Should I cancel my order with them or just pick up the ball joints (which are supposed to be there but who knows)

Anyone wanna come over and help me work on my Jeep this weekend? I'm anxious to get this stuff finished or at least closer to completion.

Well I called both Advance Auto and NAPA and neither one of them had axle shims. Does anyone else know where I can get a set quickly and relatively inexpensively? I don't care about brand, I just need some ASAP!!

Besides 4WP I dunno. But I know you don't wanna bother with us anymore quite yet.

Katie in the 15 years I have worked as a Jeep tech I have replaced 2 set of ball joints on a XJ (TJs are more common). One set was on mine after doing something really stupid while wheeling.

Did you get the t-case drop yet I had it sent to you on tuesday morning.

As for broken shock bolts at work I usually break the welded nut off the body and install a 8mm or 5/16 bolt in the hole.

I just got my first jeep (and for that matter, anything with 4 tires that spin) after wanting one for a really long time and had a pro comp 3" suspension lift installed at 4WD parts here in Colorado Springs.

I just got back from Iraq and was eager to the lift done and I think I rushed into it a bit w/o doing the proper research.

Realizing my oversight and the fact that they knew I was a nubie, I started reading like crazy while they were installing the lift and no kidding, it came back with a drive shaft vibration. The first thing they tried to push on me was a SYE kit w/install for $500 extra. I immediatly asked the guy about a TC drop (which I read about on this site), and he was like "oh yeah, I guess you can do that." So I'm installing that tomorrow. I'm just curious if you installed that TC drop yet and if that took care of the vibration?

This thread makes my brain hurt.

Middle school was a fun time.

Well, thanks to Tim's diligent help, we found the source of the grinding noise when I'd stop. I was experimenting with it while at a stop light on my way back to school. I shifted into neutral, and the noise immediately stopped. But it started up again when I shifted back into drive. Turns out Baker (the guy who installed my lift) stripped the top bolt that holds the right rear shock in place, and the shock was loose at the top and rattling against the exhaust. But b/c the bolt sheared off, part of it is still stuck in the hole so it has to be drilled out. I'm going to take it over to Baker's tomorrow and let him do it since it was his fault for not correcting it beforehand....I guess that's what I get when I get a person to do it rather than pay more for a shop...oh well.

And Tim thinks that I need 4 degree axle shims and probably ultimately a SYE. :(
Katie I sent you a email about the shims(Carolina Jeepsters reply). In all honesty if you have even the slightest interest in taking your XJ wheeling you will be much better off with a SYE.

OK well I went back to 4wp today and switched out the tires...after comparing a 30x9.5 to my stock ones, it just didn't really look all that much bigger, so I traded them in for the 31s.

And I was also wrong about the price on the ball joints. They were $37.00 each for a set of 4 and with tax the total was $158. I picked them up today as well.

Now, my only real complaint right now is that there is a very loud popping noise that I can both hear and feel near the left front tire. I first noticed it last night when I went to move my XJ from the curb back into the driveway. It only popped once, but I got paranoid.

Today, I was driving around, needed to get gas, and it popped several more times, from that area only. I was like, hmmm well I guess if nothing falls off...

But tonight, when I went to move the Jeep in, it popped 3 times during a 3-pt turn. It also seems to do it when I'm turning the wheels. Could it be a bad ball joint? any ideas? I don't really feel safe driving it around until I can address the issue, and I was advised by 4wp (not that I take all their advice) to get the ball joints replaced first, then put the bigger tires on and get it aligned.

Hey Rob I'm really glad you posted that link b/c I thought SYEs were a lot more expensive than that...like $250-399. Heck, I can prolly afford it if it's just $179...makes me kinda wish I hadn't bought that grille guard for it before I got all the necessary stuff bought and paid for...oh well, live and learn.
