my 91 xj

ok so i have a small dilemma.

all the rubber bushings in the front need to be replaced.
im considering just buying the kit for around 200 or so.
but then i had a thought.
Option 1: why not ditch the drop brackets and go 1.5 inches taller with a 4.5 complete short arm lift..

Option 2: just long arm it with current lift with plans to save parts to go 5.5" of lift later after i sye the transfer case.

they are both roughly the same cost. around 600 bucks shipped.

can i hear some opinions? thoughts? hate mail? lol

Ask yourself what's your end goal first? 5.5" and long arms seems like you want 35s and built axles too. That's steering brakes gears lockers diff armor maybe c gussets quality shocks. 4.5" on 33s with lots of bolt on stuff is a fair combo. Although I prefer the low cog now myself. My end goal is ~5" on my 35s. I have a pretty built rig for stock axles l. Just wish it had more power For the ride to and from the trails. I'd still run chromos and regear for sure though on 33s

i dont plan to jump to 35" tires at all. i want to stay around a 32/33" tire. this rig will become my wifes daily driver when i purchase another cherokee for myself (in the market for a 2 or 4 door manual) to commute with.

so i think ill just stick with current lift. maybe step up to some 4.5" coils later. (my 3.5 coils are sitting at around 3 inches of lift after front bumper install...

ill replace the warn out bushings. (have to replace front axle ujoints and outer seals anyways. so i can do it in one fell swoop.

some of the updates over the last few weeks.

after the putco install

i then installed the hella bulbs
65w (top)
hella 100/80 (bottom)
so much better to drive at night! im no longer over driving my headlights.

then i needed to replace the trans mount. (i held off for a couple weeks because i did not know how hard it was going to be doing it myself... it was super easy and took just over an hour.

i then got some stickers off etsy..

Yup be careful. If you turn your high beams on and then off again it will have both high and low on and burns the housings quick.. unless you set up your putco on the driver side. I need to switch mine over still.

even though i live far out in the country. i hardly get to turn on my brights, i set up the putco on the pass side right by the battery. have not heard to set it up drivers side any more details on that? and if i have the chance to i normally click on the light bar anyways.

here is a pic i haven't posted.

You install it exactly the same. But on the driver side you use that headlight plug. It has the high beam wire on it.

Also I recommend the hella headlight bulbs with the blue tint. It's a much cleaner, brighter, more white light. 8-9$ on amazon for both

My 65w bulbs had a blueish tint to them.. these didnt. But they look almost as white as the 65w bulbs. The last pic i posted is putco harness with 65w bulbs... Ill look into the harness more. like i said i hardly turn on high beams but you never know!

i got a ticket for my light bar. (they are now enforcing the old kc light rule with led bars, *anything over the headlights needs to have a cover when on road*)
he said it was going to be a fix it ticket. he wrote it as an infraction, 200 bucks plus 25 to get it signed off. that made me mad as i had no clue a law like that existed :(

Who needs inner fenders? Haven't had mine since I did the pate model header/fender swap.

Bummer. I heard they were cracking down on those.

I've wanted to put one behind the wind screen on my Yakima rack for that reason. And to keep the bugs off it while on the road.

$200 sucks big time

ok guys. ive been having a random problem cant track down.

i went out and started my jeep one cold morning and my tach didnt work. stayed at 0. drove to work, got in the jeep to drive home and it worked perfectly fine, has not done it since then. (happed mid march or so) now im having a problem where every once in a while my speedo reading will bounce around when im at free way speeds. ill be cruising at 60-65 and all the sudden my speedo will jump between 55-70 for no reason, its random and never happens in the same day. sometimes it wont happen for weeks at a time other times it will happen back to back 2 days in a row, anyone have a guess as to what that could be? loose connection somewhere. i have cleaned all grounds. short of pulling the dash out.

check the speedo cable

check the speedo cable

IIRC, 91-up has all electric gauges, including speedo. SO, I would check the sensor on the trans and all wiring from there to the dash. Maybe, pull it apart and clean it with some electronics cleaners. Maybe, pull the speedo gear and see if it's stripped.

started a little project.
wanted a roof rack for a long time. and my friend designed something for his xj, and i loosely copied it.
we used 3/4 conduit (i bought 8 sticks at 10')
1 stick of 1/2 imc. (used this to slug all the connections.)
8 pre bent 90* 3/4 conduit.
i then used 1/2 square stock to space the top and bottom halos apart.
its not finished but all in all i have about 100 bucks of material in it and i think it came out great.
its not finished. (still need to add in the floor for the bottom halo. i just havnt had time between work and family members grad nights.

started out getting the bottom halo cut out
IMG_20150521_170452.jpg

bottom halo fully welded up.

top halo welded up. (cross braces added for the bottom halo)

started to look like a roof rack when i got all the stand offs in and tacked together.
