my 91 xj

Ok guys, i wemt out to la grange with a couple friends played in the mud a bit regret that decision as i need to clean everything now...

But i have a leaking trans line now.... its near the trans and i cant tell which line is leaking so i bought both of them from the parts store.... the ones i bought look nothing like the pre bent lines under my jeep from what i can tell... im also looking for tips to replace these lines.

As well as what trans fluid to put back in.

I think i have some generic atf from napa.

DEX/merc III or equivalent.

I cut my tranny lines off at the tranny and ran soft lines from there.

Search a bunch and you will find out the fitting sizes and can just run ansi type fittings.

Ok thanks jon. As far as replacements. I have both upper and lower or inlet/outlet from orilys.

Ill have to get a ride from someone to the parts store to get some transfluid tomorrow....

To add insult to injury, my hood cable snapped and it took me about 4 hours to get the hood open. Finally found the bolts to the striker behind my headlights. Lol.
I already have the quick disconnect tool from my radiater replacement earlier this year so that should help.

Thats the plan... i was able to pull both lines today. Its to cold and dark to work outside now. Will finish up replacing the lines in the morning. Here are some aftermath pics.

Got the new trans lines in yesturday, and drove about 100 miles. the trans has never shifted so smooth...

i used the valvaline brand dex/merc III bought a 4 quart jug and 2 extra quarts, i read that the aw4 can take between 4-8 quarts. well i put back in 3 quarts. and then flushed the converter with some as well. used all 6 quarts that i bought.. my hard shifting from park to drive went away..

no signs of slipping. so i think its safe to say my trans is ok and nothing damaging happened on the road before i found out i was leaking trans fluid.

im also in the process of mounting hoodpins. so ill do a writeup on that tomorrow.

Havnt been able to update this thread in a while. I finished the hood pin install.

Here are some pics.

I was also able to start working on my swing out carrier for jons old bumper.

I double stacked the 1-1/2 square tube to make a 3x1-1/2 peice to work off of. I plan to add some jerry cans and other gear attatchment points on it.

And some close up of the welds.

Ive never welded square tube before so i took some scrap and made a square to flat joint. I need to work on the corners but not bad for the first try and a 90 dollar HF welder. Lol.

got some more welding done. i cut some 1/4 inch plate with a torch at school and brought it home and ground a bevel into it so i could weld it up.

teacher let use scraps and not one big piece was available so i had to cut to similar size's and weld em up. this will become the actual tire mount. ill be drilling holes into it, and welding bolts into it. should work out good.

i will take a grinder and nock off most of the bb's before paint. :)

had to redesign the original idea. ran into an issue with the mounts i wanted to do. good think i had enough material. haha.

i also designed up my own quick release idea. ill see how it pans out tomorrow.

so i ended up cutting a small peice and capped it and used it as a "tube" for my bolt to pass through. seems strong. shall see when the weight if a tire gets placed up on it.
new bar mocked up .( yes its crooked note the missing bolt (i didnt have it yet ))

i wanted to get a reference of height for where i want my wheel mounted.
i think i will drop it a few inches from here.

well i got this thing finished today. seems to be working great so far. i was under a time crunch this morning had a family dinner to get ready for and leave by 3. i finished painting it at 2:45. lol.

here is my quick release. i used an rc spring and welded a washer to the bolt works out pretty good.
(i ran out of time i didnt get to grind or cap this end.

i will have to work on it to get anything bigger then a 30" spare. i somehow messed up a measurement somewhere and the hatch just clears my tire by like 1/2"i might just lower it a bit more when i step up to 33's

IMO, the best thing to do is either rebuild the carrier or just figure out a way to move the hinge over more. Dont lower it, like Pat said, its already pretty low. Look through Jon's thread and see how his was built. He was able to fit a 36 with those mounts.

Yeah. Plan is to just move it to the passanger side a bit more. Although i like the centered look of it. I have some room to move the bolts that i welded to the plate that mounts the tire. I can move them up about 3 inches

alright guys, ive been having a problem lately, and its been getting worse.

im getting a lot of play between my steering wheel and steering box. when i lay under neath the truck and have my wife turn the wheel back and forth all the tie rod ends are smooth/tight no play (changed them when i bought the truck 25k miles ago)

and it also locked up on me the other day, i went to turn left backing out of my driveway and the steering wheel acted like it was locked with the key in the off position, i turned it a couple times back and forth and it let go and i went on my way, but im afraid that can happen on the road/freeway. not sure where to start on this one.

The loose steering could be the 3 bolts in the steering column. It's a common Chevy problem. My 88 did the same thing. As far as it locking up I couldn't tell you.

rebuilt my tire carrier, it now swings out pass side. dont have pics yet. just finished painting it today and mounted it tonight.

but i didn install my putco headlight harness.. what a huge difference it made. i have 100/80w bulbs ordered as well. hopefully ill have some great headlights soon!
i have hid lenses with a cutoff. and i finally got them pointed right what a huge difference it makes at speed. no longer feel like im over driving my headlights!

here is a before (top) and after pic (bottom)

my front end needs an overhaul so i havnt been driving it much. and i have a 95 explorer sitting in my drive way with an 8.8 under it :)
