Good choice, I moved out to soon and missed out on a lot of things. Plus my room mate and I were so poor we spent our first winter with no heat. Now that I look back on it, it was kinda of fun since every room in our house had a fire place.

ya i let my dad drive mine, hes got a 88 cherokee too. mines a 91 2 door 5 speed so everytime my mom drives it my clutch feels terrible when i get it back. some people just dont understand the manual transmission theory

Is there some safe speed limit for running in 4hi? It snowed here and I regularly run 40-50 in 4wd. I find it helps with stability a ton, and even with breaking. I ran it in 4wd through most of iowa and minnisota last december. I don't think I went over 60 though. Did I cause a lot of wear by doing this?

I love the driving conditions now on the back highways. It feels like I have a sports car and I'm passing everyone else who's just putting along at 25-30.

and that it only helps you go, not so much stop (though, i'll agree it does somewhat when using a low gear to slow down)

Nope, both my kids have their own TJ's and the wife has her own ZJ. When she had her Oldsmobile it was a different story. The upside or downside depending on point of view is she drives in weather she would never have driven in before and enjoys it somewhat, at least she no longer sweats bullets once the snow starts.

well the reason i didnt want her to it becuse its locked front and rear and it wanders really bad so for the steerings sake i told her not to. i have never had any problems driving fast in 4 hi just trying to avoid any.

and just remember that even though you can move better in 4 hi, your braking is still the same in snow.

seems like I have more breaking controll in 4wd. Kinda like a manual ABS cause they all lock up at the same time and not as easily. Turning is definately better, and that's the main benefit.

Being in or out of 4wd has nothing to do with braking. Turning will improve and traction as well. But braking will degrade in snow and ice no matter what you are in.


edit: You may experience better compression braking if you have a 5spd and that is what you are talking about, due to the resistance from 4 drive wheels. But from the pedal it will be the same.

Mine stops better in snow when in 4wd. I have no idea why, but I did it today in about a foot of snow in 2wd and in 4wd and there is a difference IMHO.
