May be going to school in SoCal...

Well right now its looking more than likely I might be going to school In SoCal, a rather big change from Colorado Springs. I would be attending Whittier College in Whittier (they offered $28,000 a year to attend and play football). I was wondering what some people's opinions are of SOCal? Hows the area, etc. I have visited the school and loved it, just wasn't able to see alot of the surrounding area. I have PM'ed DrunkTank who moved form Fort Collins to San Clemente, and he said he enjoys the area, and there is plenty of wheeling around. I was just hoping to get some feedback and some input from some of yall about what you think of SOCal, etc. I know its not going to be like Colorado...its Cali. Thanks in advance...
 
I love Southern California! What I like the most is the diversity, culturally, environmentally, and mentally! From Whittier you'll be I'd say about an hour from the ocean, an hour from mountains, and an hour from deserts.

The wheeling in California is excellent, out here we have a lot of free land to play in, in most places (BLM and USFS land) as long as you stay on the trail you are golden (note about USFS land, you do need a Forest Adventure Pass to park and to park only, those run about $20 - $30 if I recall), there are even some open "play" areas of BLM land where you are allowed to head across country.

There's a lot of us XJ's around the area as well, so whenever you want to go play we're there :)

Duuuuuuuude!

SoCal is by no means perfect, but I think the positives still outweigh the negatives. The weather and recreation opportunities are hard to beat. Skiiing, surfing, wheeling, rock climbing, anything you want to do, its all here, or within a few hours drive. Plus we have Arnold and the HOLLYWOOD sign.

Just as a side note, my wife's grandmother attended Whittier College when Richard Nixon was the ASB president.

I dont really know too much about the area.

California is an interesting place: you can go skiing in the morning and surfing in the afternoon, not too many places can offer you that. In general you will find that people are somewhat different to what you're used to, but that holds true no matter where you move outside of your home area.
If you are looking at things from the perspective of wheeling, there is plenty wheeling to be had as you already know. Also there seems to be a run or two every month. Lastly if you ever need any help with your rig, there is plenty of us in the LA/OC area that that shouldn't be a problem either.

I grew up in Whittier and La Habra Heights. My cousin went to Whittier for a couple of years on a music scholarship.So Cal is a cool place, you just have to learn to deal with some of the BS, traffic, etc. but then you get to have lunch in HB on Friday afternoon. Hopefully you can deal with politics at Whittier, it's a fairly liberal school. There's lotsa wheelin here, everything from mild to wild. Lotsa stuff to do, beach, museums, amusement parks, breweries, you name it So Cal has it to offer.
 
Don't forget the freak show that they call Venice Beach. Way better than ANY Circus has to offer!!
 
If you can get use to all the people and traffic and from what I hear the cost of liveing out there Iam SURE you will enjoy it. I grew up in San Diego and miss it a LOT !!! One of the bigest mistakes of my life was leaving in 1980 and not making it back, maybe one day I will.

that's only in the bay area, which doesn't really count. the rest of NorCal is awesome! SoCal is fun to visit, but I wouldn't ever want to live there (maaaybe for college, then get out), it's just too busy, hectic, crowded, smog, traffic, only two seasons; 70s and 80s, etc. I feel trapped if I live somewhere that I can't take a 10 minute drive and be somewhere you can't hear any cars or people.

Sure, go to college in SoCal, be sure to visit the more scenic parts of the state during your 4 years, then get out when you graduate

I moved from NJ in 92 to attend school. Since then I have married, had a kid with one on the way and bought an XJ. As far as I am concerned. It rocks..... I just wish I could afford to buy a house.

I play OT/DT, but am faster than most lineman. Whittier offered up alot of scholarships, many of the smaller private schools can't call them "sports" scholarships, so they find "other means" of giving it out by calling it different things.

You gotta remember, I live in the same state as the University of Boulder, which i have visited before, so I know all to well liberal. A big positive about Cali for me though is the fact of skiing, on basis i based my decison of schools on was the fact of whether or not they had skiing around. Big Bear wouldnt be too far, and I am a freeskier/big mountain so what Cali has to offer is perfect. I really appreciate all the replies, as it is making me more comfortable with wanting to choose Whittier. I would be doing a 3-2 engineering program so I would most likely be playing out my eligibility with football, then transferring to USC or Wash. U to get my other degree.

Whittier is a nice place. Lots of older people. Just stay on the east side of the river and you'll be OK!
