Marquette, MI wheeling.

Anybody live up near Marquette? DO they still allow wheeling on the powerline trails up there anymore? Went to school up there at NMU about 9 years ago and they did as long as you had an ORV sticker on your vehicle. Thinking about heading up there sometime next spring and doing some wheeling and camping.

stay in P-town... i miss VB, want to trade?

i cant speak for marquette, or anywhere really. i typically stick to the ORV parks or taking a few two tracks to get to what ever swimming hole i desire. someone will chime in im sure. say hello to the salt water for me.

Only salt water I will be seeing for awhile is in the Middle East for awhile. I think I will like the area better once I get back from deployment and can get the XJ running good again. Other than that, I miss the U.P. but start to miss it down here whenever I get to MI on the rare occasion. What where you in VB for? Military?

Powerline trails are sometimes a gray area, depending on if they depart from the ROW, etc.

A MI DNR Warden once gave me the rule of thumb "If it isn't posted 'no trespassing' and generally accessible by a 2wd car, you are clear." He also mentioned that if the trails are identified on a reputable map of some form that it is also a good sign. ORV sticker to cover the bases.

After living in the U.P. for some time you just get a feel for what's okay these days.

Neither of those sites are kept real up to date but you might be able to glean some information from there.

I used to go out with some of the TrailCats in my moms truck when I was going to school up there, pretty good group of guys. Never had a problem with the DNR up north like us trolls do all the time. Next time I get up there I will just cruise around campus and look for a lifted XJ or Wrangler and talk to the owner.

There's UP Overland as well as UP Jeepin' too you could check out. The only wheeling I've done close to Mqt is power lines in the winter, and some light stuff towards Big Bay and west towards Skanee

A lot of those trails out the AAA road may be a lot different because of the new mine they are putting in up there. I know the AAA and Northwest road are a lot wider and smoother than they used to be. Like 97 said UP overland has a discussion with gps tracks for trails but I think you just need to sign up.

I was stationed at KI Sawyer (Gwynn) in the early 90's and did lots of camping up there. Some light wheeling to/from the site but nothing stock rigs couldn't handle. I'll be in Marquette next weekend as I make my way home to Minnesota (retired from USAF last week) and may camp one night at our old site if it's still accessible.

Where in MN are you headed?

There's an overland route between big bay and skanee that's has tricky bits.

You may have to travel by "guess & check" considering routes change yearly based on any logging.

My best suggestion: look at topo maps and good aerial photos, pick an area that looks good and go exploring. This is how I learned how to get most anywhere in the Keweenaw.

Jeff can attest that I am a decent tour guide.

Labor day weekend again this year? Give me a call sometime soonish. We could co-ordinate with the MTU 4 wheelers too, they are always glad to take alumnus out.

<grin> Well, Memorial Day this year is already gone by.... next year, might be something to look forward to.

Who said Memorial day?

<chuckle> Ya want I should pull up your edit history?

Labor Day won't work for me this year, unfortunately.

Yeah I know better than to tangle with you on that. Regardless, hit me up sometime. [/hijack]

I think thats my plan, next time I am up there will just try to find some guys from the NMU TrailCats and tell them I used to go to school there and find out where the current spots are at, or hell, the old ones for that matter being I cant remember where anything is up there anymore.

The Grand Rapids area. Planning on spending most of my time between Hill City and Chisholm...and everyone in between.
You're gonna be off in the hinterlands, then.
