Loss of a friend

Was out on the Oregon coast this weekend we were out on the sand dunes 4wheeling and doing a little hiking around. Well to make a long story short my buddy had a heart attack and died before the EMT could even reach us. We all feel really bad. We felt like we should have done more, like we could have done more. We just didn't know the signs. There were so many errors on our part. So this is an FYI for all of you out there if your not feeling right go see a doctor please!!!!! And if your on the trail and your not feeling well please please please!!!!! let someone know so someone can help you. Please don't put the people who love you threw what i had to go threw over my weekend. I never wanna go threw this again please. At times we are along way from help. We were only 8 miles from the hospital and it took them 25 minutes. which is an eternity. My freinds name was Dave and he was 62 he was the kind of person who would stop and help anyone Thanks everyone eace:

All of us are sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. All Adults and most kids over the age of 12 should know CPR and how to summon EMS. As a nurse and educator I try to stress to all of my nursing students their families need to know life saving techniques. Most Red Cross units give very low cost cpr classes. Please take one and take a friend he/she may one day save your life. You may not have been able to save the life of your friend but you will have given him the best chance you could. Rapid recognition, rapid intervention, rapid transport to a definitive care facility.:callme:

Yeah i know CPR i had to go get the EMTs when i got back he was not breathing. The guy weight 300 plus pounds my girlfriend and our neighbor could not get him out of his truck. To administer CPR he was still in the drivers seat it took 5 people to extract him. Its also not an easy place to get into with 4 wheel drives let alone emergency vehicles. We called Ems right away.

Thats really sad man. At least he died while doing something awesome. Too many people have a similar exit, but while sleeping, or while alone.

You really can't blame yourself, sometime you get in a bad situation, and you may have no ability to help. Sorry.

Prayers to the family, and my condolences for the loss of your friend....

I am glad to say that I'm prepared as in CPR certified, but hope I will never have to use my training. I even carry a small bottle of baby aspirin in my XJ and other vehicles, to keep on hand in case of heart attacks..... You never know when you'll need it...

Thanks everyone. The hardest part for me to swallow was we were not out having fun we were out protecting our property from people that do not have the right to be there or even the respect. He was one of the key players in all of this. We have problems with theft, vandalism, trash, and some owners have even been assaulted. The horror story's that i could share. But at the end of the day it dosen't matter cause he's still dead and he probably wont be the last one. Its pretty sad this is whats its come to owning you own property.

man, i'm sorry for your loss Jason. when i first read your post, i thought you were talking about Dave Jennelle from burlingame, that freaked me out cuz i know he just had a heart attack also, but didn't know his status. Our prayers are with both of their families. don't beat yourself up over it, you did all you could, and that's what counts.

This is when I think that AED's should be more readily availible. An AED and CPR might have been able to save him. CPR alone.... maybe, but probably not. Im very sorry for your loss.

Hey Jason,
Your thread has been read from coast to coast! Your story effected me so much that I just signed up online for a cpr coarse at my local hospital. Your post motivated me to learn a skill that some day might save someone else's life.
Jason, maybe you should plan a "Memorial Run". Maybe, even plan a spot on the trail, where each person that wanted, could say a few words in "Memory" of your friend followed by a moment of silence.

Last Tuesday a man had a heart attack at my work and passed away, I would hate to die at work. So sorry for what you went through and your loss, but I thank you for posting this up. Some really good information passed on from your difficult experience, and may really help someone else someday.

Its starting to sink in that even tough we made mistakes that he still may have not made it. The part that sucks for me is the first time we rolled up on Dave he looked like he was sleeping. I stared to yell at him hey are you alright with no response his yellow lab started to bark at me. So i decided to get out of my truck and pound on his door after the 3rd or 4th time pounding on his door he woke up. I ask him Dave are you okay he said yes. So me and my GF got back into my Jeep and took off to the far end of our property. On the way back to the house we saw Dave's truck in the same spot 1/2 hour later so we rolled up again and tryed to wake him up. Thats when we new Dave was in seriouse trouble. Thats the reason i feel like i failed Dave i sould have never left him the first time he would have had an extra 1/2 hour. But you cant go back and do things over again or im sure we all would but you can learn from our mistakes. Thanks everone for all of your support it means alot.

if he woke up and said he was alright, there is no reason to think you didn't do the right thing. maybe i'm not understanding the situation correctly, but it sounds like he was just sleeping. it wasn't your fault.
