JP magazine is building 5.0L

Not 100%. Some parts you can't get. For instance the cam bolt, pin and spring is unavailable last time I checked.

I bought another engine from a shop for $50 cause I needed a few parts we lost during my build, and the spring pin and bolt were a few of them. Dealer did not have them.

I think that block, did not run due to a shattered piston, is now a poor mans stroker in a buddy's truck.

Got a question relating to this.

In the article, they state that the timing set was from a big block GM. Does anyone know if these are a direct swap?

If so, gear drives are available, for relatively cheap.

I didn't catch that in the article. I don't know why they would use one though considering you can get an adjustable billet setup from JP Performance. Gear drives really don't add anything any ways. Maybe a little bit more precise timing, and it may reduce cam harmonics above 5000 RPM (I think that is where it comes in). But that only applies if you are spinning 500 RPM frequently. I'd rather take a belt drive.

either way, if BB GM fits, it make the options many.

I have used gear drive on a couple of motorcycles (Harley and Honda VFR) and love the sound. They even make "quiet" gear drive with helical gears. Just very precise and it does help to counter the biggest weakness in an I6, Torsional harmonics in both the crank and the cam

The harmonics on the I6 come from the cam not the crank. And you have to be in that RPM range constantly. So, unless you actually like the whine I don't think the gear upgrade is worth it. However, you are correct in saying it opens up a lot of options.. as long as the bolting items to the block doesn't work.. I.E. a cover for a timing belt. I really think that that may have been a misprint of sorts (like their 1.5 vs. 1.6 rocker ratio) or they are doing some extra modification to it...

Then sometimes I just get the feeling that JP is nothing but a bunch of hacks from JU... but thats just me...

Even if they are its still an entertaining read.

The dealership I work at has had no problems getting parts for the 4.0L, its a lot of the newer vehicle's parts that is all on back order. The cam bolt, spring and pin is available, I just bought the three about a month ago for my build.
Mopar performance just the other day officially anounced a 4.7L stroker that will be available also, no word yet on price or power numbers though.

Here's the link from the disscusion in OT

The mopar 4.7L stroker is supposed to put out around 265hp and 290lb-ft torque and cost around $5000

did anybody notice that 505 isn't even using their own roller cam in this build? If their going for the ultimate inline then why didn't they put the ultimate cam in it? Says a lot about what they think of their spiffy high dollar rollar cam set up.

I just think that it was a grind that works best with the turbo as Polar said. Maybe they don't have that sort of grind on their roller cam (which I don't like anyhow, but it is a step in the right direction for aftermarket 4.0L support).

Granted they dont add hp or torque or anything like that but you have less chance of throwing a chain then you do a belt. Take it from someone who has thrown a belt in a honda and had to replace a piston and a few valves. Albeit I've never thrown a timing belt in a 4.0 and dont really know how it would react but I do know I would rather have a chain drive system just for the peace of mind. (just my $0.02)

A belt drive doesn't add hp or torque, but it can free up a few by reducing friction loses and weight. Not a whole lot though. But mostly a timing belt resists dynamic loads coming from the camshaft better than a chain drive. Its also quieter.

yep i got the mag and with the turbo and everything there pushing 693 hp!! i want one... its pretty sick they said that there just running on 91 octane and trying to keep the milage fairly good so there staying with lower lb/hr ingectors becasue its going to be a dd. their estimate with better injectors and more tuning is possible 800 hp its a sweet article but its split up between to issues

700 HP? From 4.0 based engine? With a side-draught head?
I almost got to call BS... link to the article?
What did they do to the bottom end to make it all hold together?
Did they give an estimated cost on the beast?
