Important

Dan, I've considered more than once ditching mine and just mounting the spare in the factory location. I think what's been holding me back is mainly not having the cash to buy another rear bumper, though I could just take the swing out off.

Also, my air compressor will be mounted to the floor under the factory spare location. That's moveable.

You're planning on using this as a larger capacity rig? 4 people? Gonna need a place to stash all the gear for 4 people if you're taking it away from normal wheeling grounds.

Food for thought.

Re: Re: Important

Where do you ride?

If you're riding in a place like Attica where tools, parts and fluids are a 5 minute trip in someone else's rig, I'd leave it off. I haven't taken the spare with me in the last couple of years, which bit me in the ass in Uwharrie.

If you're going more than 60 minutes from where you left the spare, you have to start thinking about round trip times and when you might get a flat. Running back to your truck at dusk and changing a tire on the trail at night to get back sucks.

There's shitty rear bumpers with carriers that drag on everything and there's ones that don't. That is probably affected by how much you want to spend. I'm putting a rear carrier on my heep just because of Moab. I can't skydive down the cliff of Moab Rim into town and get my tire.

I agree with you here, and I guess it depends on the rig. I mount mine inside cuz I have no backseat, so I don't have to worry about a tire carrier bumper. If you have a back seat and 35's + then it becomes an issue.

I'd be screwed without my tire carrier. But the places I go I need to be self sufficient for days at a time, not just hours. Not only do I have my spare but I carry a good plug kit and onboard air. I've had more than one flat before.

I also have a largish fridge, 129lb dog and two kids that ride in the jeep. A spare on the inside is out of the question.

Like others have said. Totally depends on where you plan to take the jeep.

Not... but then again you are gonna be running bushwhackers so shits gonna be rubbin the trails anyway,do you got plans for a snorkel too? :D

Hahaha! The quadratec catalog cherokee build.

This is why I'm glad I wheel an MJ.

I can carry a half cord of firewood, most of my important spare parts, and my spare tire. And all my tools and a chainsaw if I feel like it.

I really should get some airbags for the rear though, it sagged pretty bad last time I hauled a full load of firewood up to my club's camping spot.

I wish they made a 4 door MJ.

It'd be schoolbus-long and have a horrible breakover angle :( I've considered it several times.

Hell, if the contour along the back of the door opening on an MJ was the same as the contour of the back of a 2-door XJ, I'd already be buying a pair of 2-door doors and planning an extended cab. I got the entire roof, door sills, and back of the cab off the last MJ billyjp2 parted out, and actually considered doing this till I realized it would be very difficult to get the doors to line up right.

Dan with your grandpa back you might want to think about mounting the spare under the rig, but it might get hung up on the curbs at the mall, I will have to think a little more on this one for you.....

I liked my tire carrier on my XJ, but it was custom built and high clearance. I don't have $1k to drop on a bumper for the ZJ, so the spare stays in the factory location for now. Of course I am running Fisher Price My First MTRs in 245/75/16 :D

Still eats up cargo room though.

You guys all know how to make a guy feel, umm, well, old. It's a good thing T is a young hottie to offset how my friends make me feel. ;)

...anyhow, this is the bumper I'm thinking of...

http://www.logansmetal4x4.com/jechxjrebuwt.html

the other option would be the same bumper w/o the carrier, which is half the money. My thoughts are to hold off on the flares for now and put that cash towards the carrier bumper, but before I spend $700+ I wanted to get some opinions. I know my options are spare on the roof, in the back or a carrier bumper.

I don't like the idea of the roof mainly because of the center of gravity issues and it's not fun putting it up and down. When I had my spare on the roof with my old jeep, I didn't like it for many reasons, including fuel mileage.

I don't like the idea of in the rear mainly because of the space it takes up.

I really wanted to know if there were major side effects other than the obvious.

I hit my bumper on climbs all the time. I play on different trails than you do bud.

I know you do, i think the direction of his new rig is to be more of a family wheeler.....wheeler? That is why i'd say go for it on his rig. I'm going to modify my carrier to match the angle to the back glass. I enjoy having a lot of cargo room in my Jeep, that is why my tire is on the bumper.

Dan are you wanting a bumper for armor purposes, or just to hold up a tire? I'm guessing for armor, but if you just want to get the tire outside, I have always been a fan of the Detours Tailbone.

Yep, understood and agree.
