Important

you guys complaining about 5 degree weather, haha

This was from this morning on my way to the site for cold start testing. I am happy to be coming home tomorrow. No more 10 hour days in this weather... granted we were in an out of a heated shop but mostly outside.

Kinda diggin being exempt from hours of service rules. Makes for some good money getting paid by the mile.

Congrats!

I drove home from Plainfield last night on SR67 to avoid the 50 car pileup on I70. 45mph all the way home makes for a long trip. The Avalanche did well, but I was wishing for good ol' Quadratrac.

I'm glad we left when we did...

we used to be able to use weather exemptions, I clocked 21 hours one day legally, 25 another. great pay when I'm OT after 8 but it renders you useless for the next couple days.

the new company doesn't allow weather exemptions, but they won't spend a couple hundred dollars on monitors for our back up cameras. its confusing, be safe but don't give us the tools to be safe.

Most drivers don't get into the positions we do, in crowded parking lots, nosing into the drive thru and having to back out of them, moving forward and backward to line up our side doors, all around people that can't walk an extra 30 feet to get their f'n hamburger.

I gotta ask. What makes you exempt?

Nevada, Arizona and Colorado have declared states of emergency because of the relentless cold weather. Since Nevada primarily heats houses with propane they can't get enough of it right now. We got a little letter from the state that says we are exempt. I could run 24-7 right now if I could stay awake.

The irony is all the refineries are out of propane. They can't keep up to the demand. We actually aren't running as hard as we usually do so in reality the exemption isn't doing any good. It's just a great insurance policy. The DOT boys just look the other way when we roll into a port right now.

Okay, it's a temporary exemption, and there's at least a tiny little bit of thought behind it.

I've been looking over the weather reports for here, with the almanac. I thought that the winter had been a little warmer than a year ago, due to not really having anything at -10 until the last few days. Wrong..... last year, heating degree days since July 1 to date was 3726, this year is 4323, and normal is 4602. So, it is colder than last year, but still just a bit warmer than usual.

I think Sarah and I will be taking a budget vacation this fall (September possibly). Right now I found a state park in Gulf Shores that is right on the gulf (rent bikes or drive to the beach) plus has an awesome pool. If Sarah doesn't want to have the wedding this calendar year, i will use three vacation days to spend three days on the gulf (two travel days). I haven't been to the gulf since 2007 and have always wanted to see a sunrise/sunset on the beach.

meeting about the new job prospect on tuesday...had a good chat with the guy who is leaving the job last night. i remain on the fence about this, but at least i can make up my mind about it on tuesday

yep...i was mostly concerned about time off and ability to do outside work. they are very flexible and the job is pretty much exactly what i expected. the only reason he is leaving is because he was offered an amazing job as an instructor for berklee school of music's grad program in valencia spain. he never had intentions of leaving, but berklee offered him an absurd amount of money for doing the job he has always dreamed of. he has been in the position i would be taking since the job was created, when he got the offer he put me as number one on the list of potential candidates to replace him. basically if i were to move back, i would be working 70% at that job and 30% on outside projects...making the income potential far greater than what i made when we lived there before...and i would be getting insurance and retirement savings. something i've only had off and on since 2005. he works on outside projects every week and they have always been great about letting him have a life outside of work. basically, it feels a little like he is handing me his baby.

Regear is complete! Now an exhaust and I'm ready!

If you were closer I'd recommend the guy I used to work for. He tucked the exhaust on my 01 really well, never hit or scraped it on anything.

So today a bit of off-roading ingenuity was incorporated into our Robotics Team's Robot. We need a super low RPM, high torque motor for an 'arm' that will be picking up frisbees to go into the frisbee shooter. Even with a transmission (Tough-box brand) we couldn't get a low enough RPM that wouldn't couase the frisbee to fly out of the 'hand' on the 'arm'...

Enter the Idea of a 'doubler'. I am designing an adapter plate to mate two of these 'tough-boxes' together. Right now we have about 200 RPM. When done we'll have 12 RPM.

We have a real good shop in town, I'll have him tuck it as close as he can whe he does it.
