Important

Terrehauten, I'm really wondering if this is the sport for you, you don't have the funds required, mechanical ability to fix your jeep and not willing to damage it in any fashion. I don't want to sound mean but these are the facts.

I feel you really need to think about how well you fit in here.

Dan

I am learning mechanical ability, since my dad wasn't that great mechanically (and my parents separated when I was young) I didn't learn anything until my friends dad started showing me stuff. Once I do things a couple times, I learn. As for wheeling, funds will come. I dug myself a deep financial hole I am trying to dig out of. My XJ is the first vehicle I paid off that I want to keep even if I have to put major parts in it. I do plan to get a DD hopefully in a year.

there are xjers that build there jeep up real nice and only take them on easy trails, not so much in the MWC (or NAC from what ken displayed) but there out there somewhere... florda maybe.....

anyone wanna teach me how to weld??? ive been scanning clist for used welders and im going to buy one before summer. mostly i want to be able to build custom duck blinds for boats, but a secondary hobby would be fixing parts on the xj and hopefully being able to do some custom things in 2-3 years when it comes time to make the j10 a diesel...

cmon, don't ya'll line up too fast now :) i promise im a fast learner...

i will bring bacon and whiskey if that will sweeten the deal. i know i don't live too close to a lot of ya'll but i get around.

1st. get the rear leaf springs back to normal height
2nd. Rock sliders. I found a nice dent on my drivers side rocker now. At least it is superficial and not deep.

This is where I learned.

Where are you at in Iowa? You have any tech or community colleges in your area? I promised myself after I was finally all done at Purdue I'd go enroll at Ivy Tech and take a welding course. Of course that was a few years ago and I failed to execute, but eh... My buddy is taking a few at the local CC and it seems like a good way to get up to speed quick, night classes are offered, and it's fairly affordable in my opinion, especially if you're just taking 1 class at a time.

Then after you've tried a few welding styles you may feel more comfortable with one over another, and if you're good at stick you can get a welder real cheap. From what my buddy says, MIG has been the easiest for him to pick up and run with, probably due to not having to hold a gun in one hand and a rod in the other (which is what I do around my house when I'm feeling manly).

Kraig, I will teach ya if you want to make the trip down. I even have a 110 flux core welder I am wanting to sell if your looking for a cheap welder to learn with. Call me some evening if you are interested at all....we can iron out some details.

I went up north in the snow and got drunk at a casino last weekend. Ended up winning enough to pay for gas, drinks and shackle relocation brackets!

ahhh, just cover the damage with some Ballistic Fabrication stickers :D

Thanks for posting that Dan, I have not seen that before! Coincidentally I've been eyeballing some welders again lately, I've decided to go bigger this time and get whatever I can run on a 240V 30A circuit. Would like to stay under $500 for the welder, figuring I'll need a bit more for a tank, wire, and gas. Any suggestions from anyone?

I bet if he orders the stickers now he might have them by next WF. :D

The first dent I put in goldie was so long ago I honestly dont remember what caused it...probably something not cool like wheeling, but lets make believe it was something cool....hmmm...maybe io was the time I had the stripper pole mounted to the roof...yeah, that was it.

Tyler, I never knew you had a wrangler!

I have actually had a few Wranglers...my original screen name on here was XJ&TJ4ME!!

Xj is dewinterfested. The only damage I got was a little dent and two scrapes on the front passenger door and a scrap dent on the rocker below the drivers door. Sorta was in the shock of it after it happened so I didn't wheel on Saturday. Now, I am rethinking that decision. Maybe a small lift (budget) will give me enough distance to avoid any rubbing on green.
it sounds like you might want to stay on pavement. Hell, my first scratch on each jeep is the one that makes me stop caring and let them get scratched more. The only jeep I am keeping pretty is my mj streetqueen project.

I only went easy on mine because I had to keep it from breaking in half and avoid the axles falling off, because it is getting tow dollied home.

Yes, I was going easy on mine. Really easy in fact, I barely spun the tires. Hydrolocking aside... :dunce:

If I hadn't agreed to hang with my bro in chicago (still there) I'd be down. Not that I actually know how to weld... the boogers I spew usually hold things together though.

(Pay no attention to the rear right shock mount... :anon:)

Terre, there is nothing wrong with being here as an XJ enthusiast, or even a preservationist, but like Dan said, if you lake the funds, ability and the desire to absorb some rash every now and then, you should reconsider your goals here.
If you wheel it, it will break and it will dent, it is inevitable.
All of the modified, cut up rigs you saw this weekend where at one time nice looking vehicles.

and the nice looking vehicles without damage come from guys who have been wheeling a LONG time and have improved the skill set required. That said, even the best drivers out there get damage now and then....heck I get a new dent every trip.
